OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) – For the third time, KFOR is featuring a young man who is still searching for a place to call home while in his 8th year in DHS custody.
Although the journey has been tough, Thomas says it’s made him a better person – owning up to and learning from his mistakes.
News 4 featured Thomas when he was 11, 15 and now again as a 17-year-old, in his final year in DHS Custody.
He’s matured a lot, but one thing hasn’t changed – his love of sports.
So we took him to play a game of pickleball.
“I’ve never been here before but I’ve played,” Thomas said.
At Chicken N Pickle, Thomas and one of the pros took the first swings.
It took a little warming up – but it was obvious Thomas was a natural athlete.
Our crew asked him if he had any advice on how to play – he said to listen to the pro.
That’s the thing about Thomas, he’s been determined to learn from others – and himself – over his eight years searching for a family – without success.
“Some of that is my fault,” Thomas said. “I didn’t behave as much as I should but I really want to work toward a home because I feel I can really do it this time.”
As you can imagine, he’s faced a number of challenges.
“Just doing bad in school,” Thomas said, adding that the fact that he’s been through a lot is no reason for it. “That’s not an excuse, though. It’s really not.”
It’s a powerful admission from a teen who’s been working to better himself since he was 11 years old.
“Not arguing, saying yes ma’am, no ma’m, yes sir, no sir,” Thomas told News 4 in 2015.
The clock is ticking for Thomas to find a family.
“It’s definitely nerve-wracking, for sure,” Thomas said. “I’m not ready to be 18 yet, that’s for sure but time doesn’t go on my decisions.”
A 17-year-old who’s willing to do whatever it takes – to find a place to call home.
“Just a family that’s going to keep me and let me stay there for however long I need to stay,” Thomas said.
Your best shot at adopting a child is to go ahead and get the process started. It can take a few months to get approved. For all of the details contact the DHS hotline at 1-800-376-9729 or visit online.

FAIRFIELD, Calif. (KTXL) – A Northern California homeowner fatally shot an armed man – who was on parole for another home invasion – after he kicked down the homeowner's door Tuesday morning, police say.
On Tuesday, a piece of plywood covering the front door of the home on Vintage Valley Drive in Fairfield is the only sign that something happened.
PANAMA CITY BEACH, Fla. (WMBB) – Calling it the “last thing” he wanted to say, Chief J.R. Talamantez confirmed every parent’s worst fear Tuesday and announced that a 6-year-old boy who went missing on Panama City Beach had been found dead.
“They didn’t do anything wrong,” he said of the boy’s parents. “This was a horrible accident.”
New research from France adds to evidence that widely used COVID-19 vaccines still offer strong protection against a coronavirus mutant that is spreading rapidly around the world and now is the most prevalent variant in the U.S.
The delta variant is surging through populations with low vaccination rates. On Thursday, Dr. Rochelle Walensky, director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said that’s leading to “two truths” — highly immunized swaths of America are getting back to normal while hospitalizations are rising in other places.

Eddie Allshouse, an American high school student from Kadena High School was stabbed to death in November 2011 in Okinawa, Japan, police said. The 17-year-old was in a band called Shores, according to its Facebook page. The Okinawan teen who stabbed Allshouse received an 8-year sentence on June 22, 2012. ()
CAMP FOSTER, Okinawa — A Japanese teenager was sentenced to eight years in prison by a local district court Friday for killing a Kadena High School student with a replica sword last year.
Naoichiro William Anzai, 18, was tried as an adult and found guilty of murder following a weeklong trial over the November stabbing of 17-year-old Eddie Allshouse in a Yomitan apartment. In Japan, those under 20 years old are considered minors.
The murder of Allshouse, a popular student and rock musician, was a shock to the local Japanese-American and military communities and his memorial service drew hundreds of mourners, including the commander of the Torii Station Army base.
On Friday, the courtroom was filled with Kadena students and parents who attended the trial to support the Allshouse family.
“We are not happy,” said Ed Allshouse, the victim’s father and a U.S. civilian contractor, following the sentencing in Naha District Court. “No sentence is enough for us, but this is too short.”
Anzai is eligible for early release after five years. He had faced a maximum of 10 years in prison, according to sentencing limits set by the court.
A Japanese judge said there was “some room for sympathy,” citing Anzai’s history of coming from a broken home and living alone. Anzai was 17 at the time of the murder.
Anzai pleaded guilty to stabbing Allshouse, but testified that he had not intended to kill him.
The two were acquaintances, and Allshouse was staying at Anzai’s apartment when they had a pre-dawn confrontation over the alleged sexual assault of a third person, according to evidence presented at the trial.
Anzai testified that he became enraged during the incident and swung the sword at Allshouse, but claimed he did not remember stabbing him.
However, Japanese prosecutors argued, and the panel of judges agreed, that Anzai ruthlessly and brutally attacked Allshouse while he was sleeping in the apartment.
“From the depth of the wound and from the areas of the body that he had aimed at, there is no doubt that he attacked the victim with a murderous intent,” a prosecutor said during the trial.
Anzai called an ambulance after the stabbing, but Allshouse died hours later at a hospital.
