Elektra, once a student of Kimagure, a force for good, whose masters can see the future and even bring people back from the dead, is now a paid assassin. The enemy, the force for evil, at this time is known as The Hand, whose members use the dark arts. In this tale Elektra is given an assignment to kill a man and his daughter. However when the time comes to complete the mission she is unable to. The daughter is also being sought by The Hand, for she is known as a treasure that can tip the scales in favor of either good or evil. The Hand, who have the policy of "If we can't have her then no one can", send their own people to kill her. Elektra then allies herself with the Millers and helps to protect them from The Hand. The journey to the climax, the ultimate battle between good and evil for the treasure, has some interesting revelations, heading for a finale with an interesting twist.
In the ultimate battle between good and evil stands a warrior who makes the choice that tips the balance. A strong, mysterious and a deadly sexy action heroine - a lethal synthesis of grace and power. Not long after recovering from seemingly mortal wounds, Elektra has severed all ties with the world, living only for her next assignment. But in an unexpected turn of events, she is forced to make a decision that can take her life in a new direction - or destroy her. Key players in Elektra's journey are Stick, a blind martial arts master responsible for Elektra's "resurrection," and Mark Miller and Abby Miller, a father and daughter on the run from The Hand, a powerful syndicate whose members practice the dark version of the martial art Kimagure.
Directed by: Rob Bowman

Starring: Jennifer Garner, Goran Visnjic, Kirsten Prout, Terence Stamp, Will Yun Lee

After I saw Elektra, I didn't know that I had seen probably the heaviest panned film of the moment, even more so than the awful Alexander. Yet it may surprise you to know that I drew a certain amount of satisfaction from it (and that didn't come from just looking at Jennifer Garner the whole way through). Elektra is not Spider-Man or Blade, but it is a slight cut above the mediocre The Punisher, and fans of the comic book should welcome the film. Best of all, familiarity with Daredevil, which inspired this spin-off, isn't a necessity. (I'll admit now that I haven't seen Daredevil!)

Elektra is not something that you would want to see again soon (its appeal will probably fade on repeat viewings), but I gradually warmed to the film as it went on. The reason for that is because it has no pretensions. It doesn't set its sights too high. It knows what its fans want and it gives it to them, albeit with no frills.

There's the rub. What's in the film may be watchable, but it's been done better before. Anyone familiar with the Heros and Crouching Tigers of this world will recognise the inspiration for the action scenes. The plot is old hat - trained assassin Elektra (Jennifer Garner) simply has to prevent a gifted child (Kirsten Prout) and her father ("ER"'s Goran Visnjic) from falling into the hands of deadly enemies. A precocious young girl can be such a manipulative device, for few aren't moved by such a character, especially if the actress playing the girl shows promise (which she does, incidentally). There's even an unnecessary love story, and a highly-rated actor (Terence Stamp, on this occasion) is on board, and wasted. But the film is rarely dull, despite some really bad dialogue and editing (and an unnecessary first twenty minutes).

Jennifer Garner is the main reason why Elektra works. Goran Visnjic and newcomer Kirsten Prout succeed in getting some mileage out of their roles, but without Garner the film would have no energy. Compare her to Tom Jane in The Punisher and you'll see the difference. Obviously, all those years on "Alias" have helped immensely.

I'd hardly call Elektra groundbreaking, but for a pure diversion you could do much worse.

Rating: *** (out of *****)
I think Elektra deserves more credit than it is getting. It was good. Not the best, the dialogue was almost unbearable but the action and fight scenes were really well done. The beginning I have to say was almost laughable but it got much better. It was an OK film with lots of room to get better. But once again I think Jennifer Garner did a great job even if she hardly said anything and when she did say stuff it didn't support the plot or make much sense. A better story line would have made the movie a lot more interesting and relatable. The movie may have been too sci-fi for most viewers though. Still I think you should go see it, maybe twice so it can grow on you.
One of the least effective comic book-to-movie stories to have come along in the past few years. Without a viable screenplay, there's nowhere for the character to go, and no way to avoid making her look silly.
In order to be able to get more people into the cinemas, the movie was cut down for a PG-13 rating. When the DVD hit the store, the original Director's Cut was released. a5c7b9f00b
