I was given this book to read through the We Heart YA Books group for an honest review, thank you.(view spoiler)[This story is told in first person through the eyes of Florence Vaine, or Flo, as she is also called.We meet seventeen year old Flo when she moves to Chesterport into her grandmother’s home. Dropped off there by her drug addict, drug dealing father, she finds it a peaceful life from the life she had with her abusive father. Flo is singled out at her new school for ridicule because of her profound stammer. Despite that she makes friends with Caroline on the first day. Flo also has a secret ability that she hasn’t told anyone about. She has the ability to see auras, and the auras around a certain group of delinquent ‘brothers’ at the school is more unusual than she has ever seen before. Frank, or Franklin, the eldest brother takes a strong interest in Florence from the start. Slowly, Flo comes out of her self-protective shell as she becomes more involved with her friends and Frank’s family.A lot of interesting subplots were expertly woven together throughout this book. First we have the romance that is developing between Frank and Florence. The other has to do with the sinister dreams that Flo has and the feeling of being followed by something that has attempted to kill her. Another is the profound affect her father’s abuse has had upon her and the way it affects her self-worth and her perception. I found it very interesting how the author was able to include a character in the story that was not actually physically present. Terry Vaine had so emotionally and physically abused Flo that Flo couldn’t function without thinking about him in almost everything she did. However, as the story moves a long and Flo becomes more confident through her ability to stand up for herself through increasingly larger obstacles, her memories of her father are not as profound, although they never leave her and it’s an important part of the epilogue. Flo goes through tremendous growth in this story and the author did a great job at showing how each event that happened to Flo built up her confidence and abilities.I loved that the author wove so many ideas throughout the book. She didn’t make this just a romance book, but added mystery, horror, and the emotional growth of Flo throughout the story. The author would slowly feed the readers hints and answers to questions bit by bit, never too much, but just enough to keep the book suspenseful enough so that I didn’t want to put it down. I was completely engaged in the story. The only times I had a bit of trouble of paying attention was during the numerous internal dialogue scenes that Flo had. I’m not big on heavy internal scenes and so found Flo’s speculations and introspection a bit slow at times. But because the topics Flo contemplated were interesting, it wasn’t too bad. All the characters where intriguing, especially the brothers and their family. There is something ‘other’ about them, but I won’t mention what. The author does a good job of drawing out the suspense in telling the readers what it is. We find out there are a lot more unusual things going on with them and a ‘hidden’ world that Flo knows nothing about. My favorite characters were Frank and Flo. I was surprised that the author pretty much cut out Caroline, Flo’s first friend at the school, almost half way through the book. It felt rather odd that her presence was almost non-existent in the second half. I would have liked to find out more about Layla, Ross’ girlfriend, and how she learned about the uniqueness of the brothers and why she ran ‘hot and cold’ with Flo. She didn’t seem like a very nice character.One thing I’m usually a stickler for is when there are scene or time changes in a story. I like to see either paragraph separators, extra blank lines between paragraphs, or the start of a new chapter. None of those were done in this book. However, when the author did change time or scenes, she would start the paragraph with information that told the readers we were at a different location or another day, for instance the beeping of an alarm clock. I found it easy to follow along with the changes without any trouble.There aren’t many glaring issues with this story other than near the beginning I noticed that the font styles would change from sans-serif to serif and back again. The other issue was quite a few grammatical errors like missing words, extra words and transposed words. I’m sure that can be easily cleaned up with another person looking over the story.A Strange Fire seems to be complete by itself since there really wasn’t much of a cliff-hanger. But I wouldn’t mind reading further stories in the series.In conclusion I found the characters interesting and the story-line intriguing and well done. I didn’t care for the large amount of internal dialogue or the grammatical errors. This story deserves a solid 4 stars. (hide spoiler)]
