I picked this up because its been ages since Ive actually read a contemporary romance and I wanted to remind myself what they were like, so this is probably an unfair review judging a single book for the character of its genre. (Melanie Schuster pls dont read).That said it wasnt bad! The heroine was bland, the hero was improbably great in every way imaginable, the romance went from zero to eighty in two pages and then stopped building entirely until it suddenly zoomed to 200% in the last chapter, and there was zero drama until a kid suddenly became mortally ill out of nowhere, but it was pretty fun and it does all the stuff you want if youre reading a category romance (i.e. pretty clothes, pretty men, yummy food, spacious houses, happy families, sensuality everywhere, and everything in MCs life working out perfectly exactly when it should.)I did appreciate that a) the book starts with a fakeout of MC reliving a waterfall-on-the-beach sex scene from her favorite romance novel from the same line, b) she spends her first real date with Lead Dude reading him her favorite romance novel from the same line, and he loves it, c) despite not having sex for ten years, shes a great lover, because of all the stuff shes learned from her romance novels in this line, and d) the only actual romantic dilemma is solved when Lead Dude randomly runs into MCs favorite romance writer and she explains his love life to him.IDK if that level of joyful meta self-awareness is common in romances these days or it I just lucked out, but it was adorable. Also, I do enjoy the way an authors romances these days are often chained together so that a minor character in one book is the romance lead in the next one; it give the world a sort of linear depth, and its fun to play spot the previous and future heroines.
