Ill say it again: I love the Ensign! This month was no exception. Every article taught me something new or gave me new perspective on a part of the gospel. I found the article on Zimbabwe fascinating. I marvel that from 401 members in 1965, there are over 23,000 members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints there today. When we watched the conference sessions from October of 2013 on DVR last night, it was good to remember that Edward Dube who spoke in the Saturday session was the first member from Zimbabwe to be a general authority. Another fascinating article was the one on Women from the Old Testament. The author took 6 women from the Old Testament--Eve, Sarah, Rebekah, Leah, Rachel,and Deborah--and gave their outstanding qualities and taught us a little about these faithful women. I am especially interested in Rebekah just now because we are listening to the audio book by Orson Scott Card about Rebekah. She is a compelling woman of strong mind and great spirituality. It is good to know more factual information about her along with the fictional account of her life as seen by Brother Card. I really have come to admire and respect Rebekah. And this article helped me respect all the faithful women of the Old Testament. Another article that was enlightening was Faithful Parents and Wayward Children: Sustaining Hope While Overcoming Misunderstanding, by David A. Bednar. He gives us the background of the comforting quotes given by general authorities of the church to parents who are struggling with their children who have gone astray. He cautions us against leaning solely on these quotes because some of them tend to allow us to believe that the principle of agency might be violated if those quotes are true. He concludes his article with these words: As parents are patient and persistent in loving their children and in becoming living examples of disciples of Jesus Christ, they most effectively teach the FatherвЂ™s plan of happiness. The steadfastness of such parents bears powerful witness of the redeeming and strengthening powers of the SaviorвЂ™s Atonement and invites wayward children to see with new eyes and to hear with new ears (see Matthew 13:43). Acting in accordance with the teachings of the Savior invites spiritual power into our livesвЂ”power to hear and heed, power to discern, and power to persevere. Devoted discipleship is the best and only answer to every question and challenge. I am thankful for the great insight that the many who contribute to the Ensign each month. They bless my life.
