As Ive stated before, Im not a fan of fiction but I wanted to read this because I met the author and she is a ham radio operator, as I am. It was the old birds of a feather thing. I believe this was N. L. Williams first novel and it has its ups and downs. First, lets cover the good stuff. The story has many twists and turns and surprises. There are some good, suspenseful moments and in some of those, I didnt want to put the book down. Some of the characters are well developed, such as the main character, Destin, but others are more transparent and almost feel like stand-ins, as if the real character never showed up for the audition.The writing is clean and crisp and doesnвЂ™t wander. The story is well developed and I did keep wondering how it was going to end. Williams did a nice job describing the Appalachian countryside and her words painted a mental landscape for the story to unfold in.Now letвЂ™s look at the things that didnвЂ™t work so well for me.Since I am a radio amateur, I kept looking for the radio to play a key part in the story, but it never really surfaced; it was always on the periphery. I imagined a scenario where the antagonists would somehow be monitoring telephone and cell phone communications between our heroes and the hams would end up using their radios, circumventing the monitoring and getting a leg up on the enemy. To me the ham radio was merely a sideshow that helped in some male bonding scenes, but it could have just as well been motorcycles or stamp collections.There are two altercations near the beginning that just didnвЂ™t work. Educated people just donвЂ™t take swings at each other that often in the real world, unless theyвЂ™re under the influence of something. Yeah, Joe six-pack in a bar is so inclined, but not more sophisticated people, and the characters in this book are supposed to be people that are above redneck status.Amateur radio operators will note that in one scene a fellow has an elaborate radio station, yet our main character doesnвЂ™t know this from outside the home, because he doesnвЂ™t see any antennas. A station that elaborate would have what is known as an вЂњantenna farm,вЂќ with all sorts of towers and wire. For me, it just didnвЂ™t fit.Ultimately, the book is about a conspiracy theory and the last few chapters of the book turn into a lecture on the U.N., abortion, The New World Order, and how chaos is imminent. France is the whipping boy once again and even though the publishing date is 2009, I felt like I was back in 2003. Environmentalists end up being the bad guys and corporate America the good guys, especially the mining companies. In light of current events with miners dying in West Virginia due to lax regulation enforcement I found the stories theme weakened considerably.
