مجموعه ای از نوشته های گاندی در مورد نیایش که وی طی پنجاه سال فعالیت های خود نوشته است، در این کتاب گردآوری شده است. اهمیت نیایش در نظر گاندی به قدری ست که آن را هسته ی اصلی دین می داند. گاندی معتقد است انسان بیش از غذا به نيايش محتاج است زیرا می توان چند روز بدون غذا زنده ماند اما بدون نیایش هرگز. می توان این سخن او را اینگونه تفسیر کرد که چون در درون آدمی نبردی دائمی بین نیکی و پلیدی برقرار است، همواره بسیار محتمل است که انسان در طرف نیروهای پلیدی و شر قرار گیرد و فجايعی را برای خودش و دیگران به بار آورد. این نیایش است که اگر از جان و دل برآید می تواند انسان را در سمت نیروهای نیکی قرار دهد و از تسلیم او به نیروهای شر جلو گیری کند. کارکرد اصلی نیایش ایجاد تحول و دگرگونی در خود شخص است. به نظر نمی رسد که گاندی می توانست بدون بهره گیری از نیایش آن روح والایی را پرورش دهد که او را در نجات هند یاری داد. انسان از طریق نیایش قادر است آن نسخه ی بهتری را که از خود سراغ دارد بیشتر پرورش دهد و آن را به صحنه ی زندگی اش وارد کند. گاندی در نیایش های دسته جمعی خود در پی ايجاد اتحاد بیشتر میان ادیان مختلف بود، هر چند با مخالفت های بسیاری مواجه می شد. از طریق نیایش فردی و گروهی می توان محبت متقابل میان انسان ها افزایش داد، هدفی که گاندی تا پایان عمر به دنبالش بود.
