In Plantations of the Carolina Low Country (which also includes several churches and country homes), Samuel G. Stoney et al. have produced exactly what a survey of homes out to be; a thorough, gorgeously illustrated work that combines history and family lore into a concrete narrative surrounding a physical place. It should come as no surprise that this work was first published in 1928 as society has fallen too low to produce a work such as this one today. The most refreshing aspect of Plantations is the genuine art which went into crafting its writing. Historical and familial accounts are lively and engaging, and even the finer points of architecture and design are rendered in pleasing prose. It is so charming that the authors speak of these homes with the eloquence which their beauty demands. Stoney et al. have also provided the most excellent addenda to their edition. Here are the detailed schematics of hardware and scrollwork, the maps of plantations and their grounds, and the floorplans, so lacking in modern treatments of homes. Which is not to say that Plantations does not have some faults. The layout, in which the home histories are in a different section from the illustrations, is upsetting but unavoidable due to the constraints of publication. It would also have been wonderful to learn more about the objects and furniture of these homes, especially since a large number of these buildings have sense been lost to accidental or intentional destruction. I would strongly recommend Plantations of the Carolina Low Country to anyone interested in Southern architecture and the beauties of the Old South
