On our way home, after a Midwest road trip, we stopped in Vicksburg, Mississippi, for lunch, but first went into the visitors center of the Civil War battlefield(Vicksburg National Military Park). Inside the center was a small exhibit to which I gave only cursory glances, until I came to the re-creation of a cave holding an original rocking chair used during the siege of Vicksburg. I dont know a lot about the American Civil War, but I was still surprised that I had never heard of Vicksburg inhabitants digging and then living in caves during the siege of the city. So, even though I am far from a Civil War buff, my interest was piqued and I went in to the small gift shop, hoping, though not expecting, to find a book exactly like this one.I started reading it after lunch and was surprised at how interesting and well-written it was, and by how much I enjoyed it, though perhaps I shouldnt have been since I also remembering being surprised at how much I enjoyed The White Castle of Louisiana after buying that in the gift shop of Nottoway Plantation in 2004. Not surprisingly, literary finds are my favorite kinds of trip souvenirs, and this one held the added benefit of satisfying my curiosity.
