Onetti (y en menor medida Pessoa) es el culpable de que me encuentre retrasado 6 libros con respecto a mi challenge anual de goodreads, pero definitivamente valió la pena el retraso. Este es un libro extenso, no apto para lectores que buscan una satisfacción inmediata, se tiene que leer pacientemente, hay que adentrarse en las historias y los personajes, leyendo con detenimiento cada pasaje de estos cuentos, incluso teniendo que releer algunas porciones de las historias para poder compenetrarse en ellas, formar parte de los hechos, estar presente junto a esos personajes para llegar a entenderlos. Si uno quiere leer a Onetti sin tomarse esas molestias, la lectura puede tornarse pesada, dolorosa, agobiante al menos. Su estilo es mucho más afín a escritores como Faulkner, Joyce o Proust, y mucho menos a sus contemporáneos más afables para el lector latinoamericano (Borges, Cortázar, García Marquez, posiblemente más parecido a Rulfo), sus historias están llenas de ambiguedades, carentes de emoción, deprimentes incluso, su prosa es, si no rebuscada, al menos si bastante elaborada. Estas historias parecieran no narradas por Onetti el escritor que crea una historia, sino por Onetti el observador siempre presente que imprime sus pensamientos sobre una diversidad de situaciones cotidianas conforme van llegando a sus ojos y su mente, sin conceder al lector ningún tipo de antecedente a lo que está ocurriendo. Pero si uno se toma el tiempo de compenetrarse en la lectura, se encontrará con una serie de historias conmovedoras, que sin ser emotivas si llegan a causar un impacto duradero en el lector. Probablemente la analogía más acertada que se me ocurre sobre Onetti es compararlo con un buen vino tannat, otro buen producto uruguayo. Al igual que éstos, la prosa de Onetti es áspera, tánica, corpulenta, dificil de apreciar desde el primer trago, y no apta para todo mundo, pero si se toma el tiempo y se le da el suficiente aire se encuentran matices y notas ocultas, de una gran complejidad de aromas y sabores, y los finales, al igual que los del vino, siempre resultan memorables.
