After his wife falls under the influence of a drug dealer, an everyday guy transforms himself into Crimson Bolt, a superhero with the best intentions, but lacking in heroic skills.
Frank Darrbo is a hapless fry cook. When his wife Sarah falls off the wagon and dumps him for Jacques, a drug dealer, Frank tries to get her back by reporting her kidnapped, grabbing her from Jacques' car, and wailing for her to return. After watching Christian TV and having a vision, he becomes a superhero to fight evil. He sews a costume, finds a weapon (a pipe wrench) and looks for crimes to stop. He has problems: his wrench inflicts real injury, so the cops want him for being a vigilante, his sense of boundaries is flawed, and Jacques' gang has guns. Libby, a clerk at a comic book store, becomes his sidekick, and it's time to go save Sarah. What chance do they have?
You do have to wonder upon perusing the DVD cover of 'Super' just what kind of cheap trash gains the attention of such talent as Kevin Bacon, Liv Tyler, Ellen Page and Rainn Wilson and the fact that writer and director James Gunn's immediate cult classic black comedy has already fooled you should give you the largest of hints.

Immediately off the top of your head, if you call yourself a fan of contemporary film, you'll at least remember that James Gunn wrote Zack Snyder's remake of George A Romero's 'Dawn of the Dead' and created Nathan Fillion/Michael Rooker cult alien horror comedy 'Slither' more than half a decade back.

If you can make the jump between films, then you know that this is a completely demented, more adult offering of the recent spate of comic book/superhero movies - and especially borrowing from vigilante comic actioner 'Kick Ass.' But despite its modest budget, 'Super' turns out to be a whole lot more than that. In fact it throws in massive parodies to Batman and the cracked psychology of the Dark Knight himself, Bruce Wayne.

It makes fun of Bible Belt American mentality and gives us the reality over the fantasy; what would a broken man do if he fuelled his own obsession for justice and revenge to the point where it possibly drove him insane and who in the world would truly give a s**t? Frank Darrbo is a simple man (really simple), who is blessed with the hottest wife imaginable (Liv Tyler). Only things are not what they seem. He is a lot more into the relationship than she is but there are underlying reasons why and you'll be sure to know about them.

When local drug-lord Jaques aka 'Jock' (Kevin Bacon) comes into Frank's life and walks back out again with his wife, Frank is destroyed and after confronting the drug-lord and his gang of thugs and getting literally stomped, so begins his obsession with crime fighting... especially after he has a prophetic religious vision where he is chosen by the finger of God to rid his town of crime.

From there, it gets hilarious. And bloody. And absurdly violent although ridiculously even more hilarious. But Frank, now as the Crimson Bolt, will need help in winning his junkie wife back from the mob and he gets it in the form of psychopathic comic bookstore hottie Libby (Ellen Page) and things soon take a turn for the worst.

James Gunn's writing and directing have really shone through this time and I rate this as one of my favourite new films of 2013. It helps that the man has a family for a film production group, especially in the case of the actors. 'Slither's Nathan Fillion, Michael Rooker and natural funnyman Gregg Henry are all back on set and providing some decent laughs in their own ways.

And also Kevin Bacon and Liv Tyler provide some weighty presence to a film that has a very earthy independent vibe to it but the greater thanks from me go to Office star Rainn Wilson and Ellen Page. These two don't just provide us with the most insane crime fighting duo ever witnessed, there is a serious psychotic streak in there, a sort of method acting that takes the comedy beyond the standard boundaries that I so very much appreciated.

Wilson, to begin with, is like a white collar, sad and slightly overweight Bruce Wayne; if the guy had never been a multi-millionaire. You may not find yourself laughing out aloud, but more or less you will be brimming with delight at how well this man walks the line between darkly funny and insane.

Ellen Page on the other hand is one of my favourite young starlets of recent times and to see her flexing comedic muscle is as much a delight as it was seeing her dressed like Robin from the original Batman comics. But then she knows how to employ tackiness very well, it seems and this had me in bulk.

This is actually a pretty disturbing film, quite dramatic in some places and does relate to the viewer rather than run completely off the rails, so please, at the end of the film, compare it with Kick Ass and see which of them means more to you at last!
There are two things that I don't understand.

Could someone please explain to me how acting talent the likes of Liv Tyler, Kevin Bacon, Nathan Fillion and Ellen Page could possibly end up in a poorly made, low-budget Rainn Wilson "comedy"? I'm sorry, but I didn't laugh at all. No disrespect intended, but there's no real comedy to be had in just creating graphically over the top scenes. That's not humour, sorry folks.

The other thing I don't understand, however, is how this "comedy" then proceeds to generate an average review rating of 7.5 out of 10 here on IMDb, across almost a thousand voters. What are you people smoking? I've seen movies twice as good as this score an IMDb rating of only half that.

I'm into the superhero movie craze as much as anyone right now, but quite how anyone can consider this a good movie escapes me completely.
Skip this one, even if your hipster significant other whines a blue streak.
No, it is an original story by James Gunn. It is a cartoon specifically created for the movie. a5c7b9f00b
