A secret military team, SG-1, is formed to explore other planets through the recently discovered Stargates.
General Hammond summons Colonel Jack O'Neill out of retirement to embark on a secret rescue mission. O'Neill confesses that he disobeyed orders to destroy the Stargate on Planet Abydos, and that scientist Daniel Jackson may still be alive. Arriving on Abydos with his team, O'Neill meets up once again with the scientist, who has discovered a giant elaborate cartouche in hieroglyphics. All signs point to the fact that this is a map of many Stargates that exist throughout the galaxy - a development that makes the dream of the SG-1 team to travel throughout the universe in time a reality.
Not being a Showtime subscriber, I came to this show relatively late. (Kudos to Showtime for putting the money up for it, though.) There's not a lot of TV I like; it has to be a good story with good dialogue (which cuts out about 95% of everything on.) Joss Whedon's shows were an oasis of talent; so, it turns out, is SG-1. Engaging scripts (I'm not sure I'd go so far as 'intelligent', every time, but no show is 100% great), great acting (Anderson is of course the standout, a wisecracking, dissembling brilliant soldier, but everybody makes their characters vivid (I was seriously bummed when Janet bought it, for instance). Give this one a look. It may take a few episodes to get into the swing of it, but you'll be well-rewarded.
Having peaked with Universal Soldier, Roland Emmerich went on to make this incredibly sub genre movie. Since then, we have been treated to twenty two episodes of this series per year, and they still can't find anything of remote interest on the other side of the Stargate. Why do these people continue to travel through the gate, and why do others continue to watch them?

(Just to be clear: I thought Universal Soldier was a piece of navel lint plucked from the creative belly buttons of Emmerich and Devlin)

Anderson left the show after Season 8 wrapped to spend more time with his daughter, and O'Neill left the SGC after he was promoted the rank of Major General, and (presumably) to head "Homeworld Security" department. In the original Stargate movie, the inhabitants of Abydos, the planet the initial Stargate team travels to, speak a version of ancient Egyptian which Daniel Jackson was able to translate. In a two hour movie with a three act structure, this makes the story more interesting and time can be dealt relating to the conflicts with it. In a 40-45 minute weekly show however, not enough time exists within each episode for Daniel Jackson or someone else to translate every language of every single planet that SG-1 visits (though one can reasonably argue that most planets in the Milky Way have sizable Goa'uld-speaking populations). Thus, for the sake of storytelling, the writers decided it would be best to ignore this issue completely. a5c7b9f00b
