A secret military team, SG-1, is formed to explore other planets through the recently discovered Stargates.
General Hammond summons Colonel Jack O'Neill out of retirement to embark on a secret rescue mission. O'Neill confesses that he disobeyed orders to destroy the Stargate on Planet Abydos, and that scientist Daniel Jackson may still be alive. Arriving on Abydos with his team, O'Neill meets up once again with the scientist, who has discovered a giant elaborate cartouche in hieroglyphics. All signs point to the fact that this is a map of many Stargates that exist throughout the galaxy - a development that makes the dream of the SG-1 team to travel throughout the universe in time a reality.
Stargate boasts some of the greatest special effects on TV for a science fiction show. The show looks beautiful and the sets are incredible. The negative about this show is the acting of Amanda Tapping and the writing. Michael Shanks is terrific as Daniel Jackson, Christopher Judge is fantastic as T'ealc and surprisingly Richard Dean Anderson is very good as O'Neil. Tapping is the weak link in this show--her acting is cardboard style and her expressions are the same each and every show. The writing is lacking big time. The writers should have looked at the work on Farscape (one of the best written shows in Sci-Fi) and Firefly (the best post-Star Trek show ever made). Each and every show (that the team goes on a ship) they are captured--each and every show Daniel or Sam allows an enemy to access data and improve themselves. It is highly annoying that a character "supposedly" as brilliant as Samantha Carter would continuously allow enemy characters to improve themselves by allowing them access to SG technology. No military commander would ever allow that to happen. The other big annoyance is the way each and every character is a high ranking officer. As ex-military you would NEVER EVER EVER see people of that rank on these LURP (SG) team in the field. These fields would be led by a lower officer or a sergeant. No team would have a Colonel and a Major on a four man squad. The effects are spectacular--but the writing is sub-par.
A magnificent program which shows just how imaginative and professional TV can be when the director, cast, crew and screenwriters all work to the best of their considerable ability. The simple fact that it doesn't play like the film over and over again (Something which has plagued many film-cum-TV-shows of late) shows how original it really is and though yes, I admit, the first series was very 'Star Trek' in its recycling of the same story types it always remained somehow different.

Congratulations must primarily go to the cast as they are all incredibly believable and easy to relate to. Richard Dean Anderson is excellent as the hard-bitten, cynical soldier, Michael Shanks plays the James Spader role to perfection, Christopher Judge is fantastic as the Moses-like Teal'c (His range of facial expressions is unparalleled) and Amanda Tapping is possibly the best of the bunch simply because she makes her character so believable as the tough female soldier/scientist (Denise Crosby in Star Trek:TNG is a good example of how NOT to do it).

The show looks fantastic, the special effects are great and look exceedingly expensive but no show can survive on sfx alone and fortunately a masterful screenwriting crew keep the stories exciting and thought-provoking (You don't get much of that these days) and the blending of so many different story arcs is a great achievement. All in all a brilliant show and long may it continue.

For the sake of the entertainment, it is best for the viewers to ignore this issue as well and enjoy the stories that exist, even if it can be a mental challenge, especially in the episodes that feature fellow Earthlings, the Russians, speaking a different language or, at best, showing a heavy accent.

It is unfortunate that the writers didn't utilize any of the standard solutions to the language problem, such as portable universal translators (used successfully in all Star Trek series) or devices that imprint linguistic knowledge directly into the brain (those aren't the only solutions, of course). Teal'c could've easily supplied SG-1 with such technology right in the first episode. This could even have explained perfectly why Teal'c, Vala, and some others speak English on such a formal level (don't understand slang in particular), Teal'c not being aware of his frequent usage of the word "indeed", and so on. All this is fitting for a programmed knowledge. a5c7b9f00b
