An international team of scientists and military personnel discover a Stargate network in the Pegasus Galaxy and come face-to-face with a new, powerful enemy, The Wraith.
Stargate Atlantis premier was exceptional. Very VERY good. Awesome even. So good, I watched the 2 hr premier twice in the same night. Theater quality good. It seems so far that it will be a really good series in its own rights. I hope the story lines do not get "borrowed" from SG1. SG1 was once new, and it grew. And grew. And grew. It was fresh. I hope to say the same for Atlantis 7 years from now. It's off to a great start with the premier anyway. And I'd like to know who the actress is who plays the female Wraith. The woman is freakin good. Despite tons of "horror flick" makeup, the woman delivers a remarkably striking sensuality. And that body in that dress most definitely helped her deliver on that. Then again, I've always had a thing for redheads anyway. haha Atlantis is out of the "gate" with a very strong start. It has the base and apparent substance to make one heck of a good show. Hats off to Peter Deluise and crew mates. You've got a winner in your hands.
I remembered seeing a few episodes of this series when it was on the air and it looked interesting. Found it recently on Netflix and have been working my way through the series.

For Sci-Fi fans and techno-geeks, it's a decent show with lots of interesting technological ideas. Also there's a good bit of action in every episode which makes for a fun ride.

However, the story continuity is spotty to the point of being frustrating to watch. Plot points in the writing are generally consistent, however the character dialogue and dramatic elements in many of the episodes are often inconsistent. Characters often react to extreme situations with little to no urgency, not so much in their delivery (the cast does a decent job) but in the lines and the way the scenes play out. Things that they know already know to be threats or character points that were established in earlier episodes are often completely ignored. Frustrating to watch, considering that they are a smart group of people who consistently fall for the same traps over and over again. It's as though the show-runners weren't really paying all that much attention and the directors did not familiarize themselves with the series in detail before showing up for work.

In terms of the characters themselves, most are well written and there are a lot of fun comedic moments between them. However, the scientific types are written so accurately pedantic and intellectually obnoxious that they occasionally become annoying to at least this viewer. While there are some really touching moments that are quite well done, a bit more emotional oomph might have helped make the characters come across in a more meaningful way. There is very little in the way of emotional tension, and most of it is largely unjustified. I would imagine that the cast of the show might have become desperate for some meaningful scenes though they appeared to resist 'acting by numbers' for the most part.

Overall, Stargate:Atlantis is a fun and entertaining Sci-Fi show with cool adventures, decent special effects and solid action but some annoying characters who behave no differently from episode to episode despite having gone through life-changing situations and even dramatic epiphanies....it's as though the writers forgot to arc the characters...

I recommend this show for anyone who enjoyed the other Stargate incarnations and would like some more.

Warning to Canadians: I'm not sure if it was a requirement for the film and television tax funding in Canada, where the show was shot, but they really put that maple leaf badge front- and-center in every episode and the writers made sure that the letter "Z" is clearly pronounced "Zed" in practically every episode...it was amusing the first time, and it would be fine every once in a while but it gets annoying when they keep intentionally beating the same drum over and over, without any finesse. Also, as a Canadian viewer, it was embarrassing. Very tacky and thus likely counterproductive.

A long review...a critique perhaps, but do I like the show. I just wish it was less annoying to watch...though I suppose it continues to be worth the suffering.
