When a seemingly unstoppable new enemy threatens the very existence of the Earth, Admiral Pavel Chekov (Walter Koenig) is forced to work outside the boundaries of Starfleet's rules to combat this deadly new foe. When planet after planet winks out of existence, yet Starfleet refuses to act, Chekov turns to Commander Tuvok (Tim Russ, who also directs), the new head of Starfleet's covert operations division, Section 31. Together, they assemble a new elite strike-force, consisting of rogues, outcasts and criminals, led by the fearless yet haunted Lexxa Singh (Adrienne Wilkinson). The Renegades' mission is simple: take on an army and stop their leader, Borrada (Bruce Young), from destroying the Earth. Outnumbered and out-gunned, the ragtag crew is in an adrenaline-pumping race against time and space. But they soon find their foes are the least of their concerns: the real trouble may be coming from within!
Set a decade after the U.S.S Voyager's return to Earth, a rag-tag crew of renegades and outcasts must covertly work with Admiral Chekov and Tuvok to stop forces threatening the Federation from outside, and within.
Star Trek: Renegades is a movie rife with mysteries. Is it worth watching Dr. Lucien (Sean Young) and Dr. Zimmerman (Robert Picardo) make out? (That was not fun.) Why, in the 24th century, is Dr. Lucien wearing eyeglasses?! How did so many Trek alumni plus a host of C list actors sign on to a project with such an abominable script at its core? Was it just for love of the show? Because they didn't do the cinematic legacy of Star Trek any favors. It's difficult to give a low score to any Trek movie because as a die-hard fan, I'm always hungry for new stories, new perspectives, and new lore from at universe. But I can't in good conscience give this movie a higher rating.

With a reported budget of $375,000, we can't really fault Renegades for its amateurish production quality. What was so jarring were the mystifying swings, scene to scene, from fairly decent CGI to what looked like clip art from MS Word 95. Even the lighting was garish and weird in places. I have never before noticed the lighting in a movie. The filmmakers clearly spent money on makeup as there are almost a dozen different alien races on view, including a new reptilian species and a single Klingon with oily skin. They should have thrown some of that money at a couple of decent writers.

Sci-fi fans, trekkers in particular, will forgive most anything except a terrible storyline. I was confused and disoriented ten minutes into this movie. Tuvok now works for Section 31, a secret intelligence division of Star Fleet, he but interrupts a prison fight to recruit Lexxa Singh in the full view of dozens of inmates and guards? So much for covert ops. Once this black ops team is assembled, the movie devolves into a parade of sci-fi clichés and plot holes. The deepest mystery of Renegades is what exactly is going on and why? I gave up the attempt when the Betazoid member of the crew, a woman who establishes early on that she doesn't possess the telepathic abilities of the rest of her race, suddenly uses MIND CONTROL powers (which have never manifested in any member of her species in the history of the Star Trek universe) to escape captivity. Still, I have to give the filmmakers credit for the attempt. It's clear that they love Star Trek and, like me, will always want more. But the writing has got to improve if Renegades is going to survive.
...the problem is that makers of efforts like these are missing the point of Trek and are missing that good production values aren't what makes Trek so great.

Take the classic Doctor Who. The production values were truly embarrassing, but when it had great stories to tell. That is what won out the day and gave the show 52 years of life. It didn't matter that the sets were made of cardboard if the story was great and stuck to what the concept of Doctor Who was about.

I've been a Trek fans for forty years and the problem with this production and the JJ Abrams films, and where I suspect it will lie with Axanar, is that they have lost site of what made TRek so good. What made it stand the test of time. It wasn't space battles or fancy SFX. It was the stories that explored the human condition, social & political issues and questions of morality. IT was the boldly going and the seeking out of new worlds and new civilisations. Renegades, much like the Abrams reboot, is trying to sell itself as fresh and different. Well, that's all very well, but when you have taken the spirit of Trek away then all you have is just another sci-fi action film that has the Trek name slapped on it.

In terms of production values, this is definitely the best Trek fan production I have seen. The score, the sets, the SFX were all pretty good (the costumes not so much). The acting and sound mixing was certainly a improvement on other fan films. But the script was terrible and the fact is that this was meant to be a pilot for a show. Should it be? No way in hell. Frankly Tim Russ, Bob Picardo and especially Walter Koenig should know what Star Trek is about by now.

I felt like this film was trying to pander to the superficial audience members of today. The Transformers crowd. Where action is all you need to have something good. This film, irrespective of it's production values or the quality of it's acting, didn't further the legacy of Roddenberry. It had nothing to say and that it why it fails as proper Star Trek, just as the Abrams films do. I fear now that Trek with a cerebral edge is now gone.

Oh, and just as an aside, it was irresponsible allowing Edward Furlong to work on this when the man clear still has issues with addiction. He could barely stand still in the scenes he was in. Definitely signs of ongoing trauma for the poor man.
