It is the 23rd century and together with the crew of the Federation starship Enterprise we travel across the galaxy to meet new and exciting life forms on distant planets. The 80 episode TV series which was produced from 1966 to 1969 has now cult character and has fans all over the world.
Captain James T. Kirk and the crew of the Starship Enterprise explore the galaxy and defend the United Federation of Planets.
Star trek has all the chemistry of a well made TV series. What can you say? after 4 spin off's and 10 motion pictures, it is indeed a rare masterpiece. But that can't be said of it's successors. Star Trek TNG tries to capture the charisma of the original but can't. The same can be said of the other spin off's. The motion picture version of the TV series also suffered because of too many changes. When the NBC network canceled the show in 1969, that was the end. Yet it continues to live on in it's own way. I have watched the show since it first came on the air back in 1966. Since then, I have had the opportunity to revisit the show and re-discover things I didn't notice back then. Star Trek is the result of all the right people coming together and doing all the right things. The same cannot be said of other TV shows. Star Trek is a miracle, a one in a billion chance. I don't suppose that I will ever see anything like that again. I had fun watching it, and I hope that it continues to hit others like it has me and many others before me. Watch it for yourself, really get into the stories and you will feel rewarded.
Bored out of my gourd, I caught a glimpse of Yesterday between the commercials streaming across my teleset. I paused and, when the five minutes of wares-hawking was done, saw segments (between yet more commercials) of an episode of an old 20th Century entertainment, STAR TREK. "New and improved," no less, with cgi that the original show's makers couldn't have imagined possible (at that time). Watching the tale unfold (in fits and starts, between the all-too-frequent commercial breaks), I was reminded of the time- way back when- when the show first aired. It was remarkable. Not only did it opt for a more thoughtful, adult-oriented approach than its contemporaries, it also featured some great special fx... which have now been "overhauled" by Those Who Make The Decisions. Like the coloring of black and white movies or the addition of sound to silents, it was inevitable that someone, somewhere, would somewhen decide to "upgrade" the old show. Again. (The feature films aside, the series itself was redone as STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION, another excellent example of televised science fiction... but, apparently, the subsequent shows just weren't enough.) I'm not going to wax enthusiastic for the old fx shots (though, deep down, I never had a problem with them); I'll just accept the new and improved cgi as a matter of course. But I'll never forget the old show, and the way it made me feel as a kid- that anything was possible, and that Universal Brotherhood was a good thing. Beam me up, Scotty.

The Vulcan hand salute was improvised by Nimoy on the set of "Amok Time." As a child, his religious Jewish parents often took Nimoy to the local synagogue where he had seen people making this hand gesture while saying prayers--a handsign done with both hands by the descendants of Aaron (called cohen, plural cohanim) when the congregation of a Jewish synagogue is being blessed with the "May the Lord bless you and keep you." This inspired Nimoy to create the Vulcan hand salute. It takes place in the 23rd Century, the original pilot episode titled "The Cage" takes place in 2254 A.D. while the rest of the series takes place from the years 2266-2269 A.D. The "T" stands for Tiberius therefore his full name is James Tiberius Kirk. Yes and according to the late Gene Roddenberry, in 1966 before the second Star Trek pilot, Where No Man Has Gone Before had aired. Network executives were concerned about Spock having pointy ears because the shape made him appear to look "too diabolical and Satanic looking." And along with their other request that the Enterprise not have a woman as second in command. And at the time actress Majel Barrett was dating Mr. Roddenberry so he was able to work out a comprise much to everybody's satisfaction. He said, "so I married the woman and kept the alien because I could not have done it the other way around." He worked in summer stock theater. In 1969 after learning of ST Trek: TOS's cancellation, Shatner was in somewhat of a dire financial situation due to his then wife's filing for divorce and being suddenly unemployed. He contacted his agent who got him work in summer stock theater for the next few months and he bought a used pickup truck with camper shell attached. The sudden reality of no income, bills, his impending divorce and being low on funds made him realize that he couldn't afford even economy style motels while working. He then set off driving to each and every location to work as a cast member in Some Like It Hot and the truck with camper shell actually paid off in the long run. He lived this way from memorial day weekend up through labor day weekend that year when his summer job ended. And from then on William Shatner was able to keep busy as an actor working steadily in various prime time television shows which paid well and he was able to stay afloat financially. a5c7b9f00b
