In the vicinity of the liberated planet of Bajor, the Federation space station Deep Space Nine guards the opening of a stable wormhole to the far side of the galaxy.
The stable wormhole discovered by the Deep Space Nine crew is known to the Bajoran people as the Celestial Temple of their Prophets. Sisko, as discoverer of the wormhole and its inhabitants, is therefore the Emissary of Bajoran prophesy. The wormhole's other end is in the Gamma Quadrant, halfway around the galaxy from Bajor. That section of space is dominated by the malevolent Dominion. The Dominion is led by the Changelings, the race of shapeshifters to which Odo belongs. As of the beginning of the sixth season, Cardassia has joined the Dominion, and together they are waging war on the Federation and their Klingon allies. The war is quickly becoming the most costly war ever for the Federation, and the Deep Space Nine crew must fight to protect their way of life.
Star Trek has come a long way only to become a soap: Star Trek Voyager. However, its predecessor, Deep Space Nine, focused on what the Original Series and the first season of TNG mainly conveyed: action! When people watch a sci-fi show or movie, they want to see phaser blasts, people getting vaporized, explosions, and space-ships flying around and blowing each other up. TNG was too diplomatic and and political to make much action--VOY was so to the EXTREME, and also portrayed far too many romantic situations for a sci-fi show. DS9 was fun, exciting, the actors were decent and could get very witty. That action sequences were excellent, as were the special effects. It was a great show while it lasted. It's a shame they won't be coming out with any motion pictures.
I think DS9, all in all, has far surpassed the kind of quality programming that I came to expect from STNG. Instead of stilted and self-righteous characters, we are presented very human beings with all the foibles and flaws we would expect real people to display.

There isn't a happy ending to every show, and the decisions that people make aren't always the right ones. The stories have involved marriage, sex, war, religion, idolatry, politics, persecution, incarceration, drug addiction, slavery, and many other powerful themes. The politically correct attitudes of STNG didn't allow for most of these themes to be explored truthfully. Even the villiains haven't been trivialized.

The Klingons, Jem H'dar, and the Cardasians have been placed on equal footing with their Federation counterparts. In STNG, the "villains" were always prone to mistakes and moments of abject stupidity. The Federation always possessed superior moral systems as well as technologies. That kind of mentality DOES NOT exist on DS9.

DS9 inherited a whole vast array of gifted writers when STNG ended. I think it is a sign of the times that even these gifted writers, with their wonderful and introspective stories, and the talented and powerful actors on the show can't save it from the ratings axe. Even the wonderful "Trouble with Tribbles" episode was not enough to draw more viewers.

DS9 will be sorely missed, and I don't think that there will be anything in the near future that will be as well written or well acted. (Ms. Farrell really should have stuck around for the last season!)

reminisce about events that took place between O'Brien and WILL Riker on board the Enterprise, as TOM Riker would have no knowledge of such events and would possibly be exposed. Giving the Chief the cold shoulder allowed Tom to go about his business without O'Brien uncovering who he really was. Unfortunately, they aren't. This applies to the DVD releases. Due to Britain's strict policy some episodes had to be cut in order to avoid a higher rating. Because of cost-efficiency, these masters were used for nearly all European DVD releases as well. To the Death (1996) and Sons and Daughters (1997) are affected. One can find a detailed comparison for 4.23 here and for 6.03 there. It takes place from the years 2369-2375 A.D. Yes; however, these earlier episodes will help to understand what's happening in DS9.

Worf's backstory and rivalry with Duras: Sins of the Father (1990), Reunion (1990), The Mind's Eye (1991), Redemption (1991) and Redemption II (1991).

Tribbles: The Trouble with Tribbles (1967)

Koloth: The Trouble with Tribbles (1967), Kor: Errand of Mercy (1967) and Kang: Day of the Dove (1968) (Dax's Klingon friends)

Tom Riker: Second Chances (1993)

Mirror universe: Mirror, Mirror (1967)

Battle of Wolf-359 and Jennifer Sisko's death: The Best of Both Worlds (1990) and The Best of Both Worlds: Part II (1990)

Cardassians: The Wounded (1991), Chain of Command: Part I (1992), Chain of Command: Part II (1992), The Chase (1993), Parallels (1993), Lower Decks (1994), Journey's End (1994), Preemptive Strike (1994)

Bajorans: Ensign Ro (1991), Disaster (1991), The Next Phase (1992), Preemptive Strike (1994)

Ferengi: The Last Outpost (1987), The Battle (1987), Peak Performance (1989), The Price (1989), The Perfect Mate (1992), Force of Nature (1993), Bloodlines (1994)

Chief O'Brien: The Wounded (1991) (hatred of Cardassians) Data's Day (1991) (wedding) Disaster (1991) (birth of Molly)

Additionally, there is the crossover episode Birthright, Part I (1993), where the Enterprise-D docks at Deep Space Nine, and Dr. Bashir assists the TNG crew. a5c7b9f00b
