Sergeant Todd (Russell) is a veteran soldier for the an elite group of the armed forces of Earth. After being defeated by a new breed of genetically engineered soldiers, he is dumped on a waste planet and left for dead. He soon interacts with a group of crash survivors who lead out a peaceful existence on the planet. The peace is soon broken as the new breed of soldiers lands to eliminate the colony, which Sergeant Todd must defend.
In a futuristic society, some people are selected at birth to become soldiers, and trained in such a manner that they become inhuman killing machines. One of the most succesfull and older of these soldiers (Russell) is pitted against a new breed of soldiers, and after the confrontation is believed to be dead. His body is left behind in a semi-abandoned colonial planet, where everything is peaceful, and he is taught about the other aspects of life. But eventually he has to fight the new breed of soldiers again, this time to defend his new home...
Yes, the plot's very simple. Yes, there are basically only two sets. Yes, most of the budget (and the screen time) went to Kurt Russell. But so what? It never claims to be anything spiritual or meaningful. It's a good old-fashioned revenge story set in a scrapyard in space. What makes it different is Russell. He has about 20 lines, half of which are repeating what is said to him, and his face is totally deadpan throughout; yet you always know how he feels, and Todd becomes a character to know, trust and respect (if not necessarily like). This is minimalist acting at its finest. I know of no other action star who could have accomplished this. I've heard rumours that Keanu Reeves was first choice for the role. Now, THAT would have been worth watching (if you're a tree spotter!!)
Since the same esteemed gentleman who wrote the screenplay for the legendary "Blade Runner" also wrote "Soldier", it has an impressive man at the helm. It functions well as another variation upon the time-honoured science-fiction theme of the human bred for combat from the womb and when they take that away from that individual, how do they survive with no discipline and no hierarchy to give orders. Kurt Russell gives an admirable performance as Todd and you throw in the late Jon Pertwee's son Sean as the man who takes him into the encampment where Todd soon finds a new reason for living. Connie Nielsen is radiantly beautiful and a strong female presence as the heroine/widow/concerned mother.

The pervasive stench of mediocrity which surrounds all of this feel-good, emotional rollercoaster, uplifting drivel that we are spoon fed makes it all the more worthwhile when a film like "Soldier" takes you on a futuristic adventure of even a marginal sort.

Connie Nielsen is radiantly beautiful and also a strong female heroine/concerned mother. True, the film breaks no new ground and one can almost see the join marks from where it was cobbled together from a number of classic science fiction themes of when man's future foray into space colonization. It is refreshing for a long-time science fiction fan such as myself, however, to see a film that tries to be bold and expansive in this era of mediocrity and feel-good romantic emotional rollercoaster drivel that people lap up.

Soldier is a violent science fiction action film starring Kurt Russell as Sargeant Todd, an cold hardened space marine, whom was chosen at birth to be a soldier, whom is dumped and left to die on Arcadia 234, a garbage planet, when he is knocked unconscious in a fight with Caine 607 (Jason Scott Lee), a genetically engineered new breed of soldier. On the planet, Todd is befriend and nursed back to health by the survivors of a crashed spaceship, that have set up a colony on the planet and Todd struggles to adjust to living a normal life, due to his conditioning and training as a soldier. But, when Colonel Meckham (Jason Issacs), Caine 607 and the genetic engineered soldier's commanding officer orders Caine 607 and the genetic engineered soldiers to eliminate the crash survivors, as part of an training routine. Todd uses his combat skills and decides to protect the crash survivors and takes on the genetic engineered soldiers in a one man war. As an aside, writer/director Paul W.S. Anderson has stated that as far as he is concerned, his film Soldier is a 'sidequel' to Blade Runner, as it occurs in the same fictional milieu as Scott's film, although it is not actually a follow-up (Soldier was co-scripted by Blade Runner screenwriter David Peoples).

Reference- One of the battle names tattooed on Todd's arm.
