When missile technology is used to enhance toy action figures, the toys soon begin to take their battle programming too seriously.
Fifteen-year-old Alan Abernathy, the son of a toy store owner, tries out some new action figures: The Commando Elite versus The Gorgonites. But three months ago, a toy company believes it is onto something when it employs the latest government military technology in a series of action figures, enabling them to talk. They underestimate the power of the special micro chips they've employed, however, as the two opposing sides of the toy line start thinking for themselves and engaging in real combat! The Commando Elite vow to wipe out the Gorgonites in a suburban neighborhood. Alan, his neighbor Christy Fimple, (on whom he has a massive crush) with the help of the kind Gorgonites, must protect his home and family from the Commandos.
When I think of this film, I usually think Gremlins as played by toy soldiers. And not surprisingly, the director, Joe Dante, also made the film Gremlins, so I suppose that's a good thing since we know it will be well handled. But if you do compare it to Gremlins, we find the hero less interesting, the parents less interesting, the good creature, in this case toy, less cute and lovable, and the girlfriend character more ordinary. Then again, the evil creature, in this case toy, is much more evil, the action/destruction scenes, are much more convincing, but then again in Gremlins they were way funnier, the Dick Miller character, truck driver in this film, neighbor in Gremlins, is even funnier, and the whole beginning point of the toys, or Gremlins, is a little more real. Still, the film isn't as good as Gremlins, but it sure did try to be something different than most entertainment back then. It was.
I consider this movie to be just okay and it's mostly because it's really hard for me to find anything good or bad about it. It's not like other mediocre movies where there's a lot of good and a lot of bad stuff in it. It just is what it is. This movie features toys being created that come to life and fight each other. The movie is mostly just boring. The thing is, it's pretty clichéd and it's basically nothing but "Toy Story" meets "Gremlins". This was an early film by DreamWorks and around the same time they were accused of ripping off Disney films.<br/><br/>I guess this was meant to be an adult version of "Toy Story" but it really didn't seem adult at all and feels like it could have been rated PG. I remember when the film first came out and for some reason I thought it was about toys trying to take over the world. The main character and the romantic subplot are pretty clichéd and predictable. It actually does get kind of interesting at the end with the final battle. If you really wanted to see "Gremlins" with toys, then you should just watch "Krampus". Now that earns its PG-13 rating. This is by no means awful, it's just forgettable. **1/2
