The lives of reporter Polly Perkins and her ex-boyfriend, Joe Sullivan, intersect. For the past three years, large robots have been roaming the Earth, taking what they need, and vanishing as quickly as they appeared. Joe and his technical assistant Dex have been investigating and battling these mysterious robots. Meanwhile, many of the world's scientists have been systematically kidnapped. Dr. Jennings, believing that he is the next target, tells what little he knows to Polly. His beliefs are that Dr. Totenkopf, who has not been heard from in over thirty years, is carrying out a project he started prior to World War I, this project which may be associated with these robots. Polly and Joe, with Dex, join forces to find Totenkopf, which may not be easy due to their still antagonistic relationship. As they piece together Totenkopf's plot, Polly and Joe realize that stopping him from carrying out his grand plan of creating his version of a Utopian society may not be as easy as killing him.
After New York City receives a series of attacks from giant flying robots, a reporter teams up with a pilot in search of their origin, as well as the reason for the disappearances of famous scientists around the world.
Shouldn't movies like sky captain have a sneaky evil boss and a bunch of thugs and dirty rats exchanging wise cracks with the good guys and each other? Like Greenstreet, Lorre and Astor in the Maltese Falcon. Sky Captain is devoid of such dubious but fascinating people and the talking is left to the good guys. Well, actually only to some of them. Okay, just to Law and Paltrow. Angelina Jolie, Michael Gambon and Giovanni Ribisi make appearances, but their contribution is small. Gambon, an excellent actor, delivers only a few lines. His role looks superfluous. Was it left over from the 15 minutes first shoot the movie is started out as? Maybe so. Ribisi plays Law's tech man, but he has only a support role and next to that he is missing for a large part of the story. Angelina Jolie has a bigger role to play and she looks great, as she always does because whenever she appears I get the feeling something exciting is about to happen. She fit's in well, but for a short part of the film: she flashes in and flashes out again after 10 minutes of so. It is a pity, because there is much room for some gleeful vitriolic exchanges with Paltrow (and Law).

The dialog almost looks to be more of a sideshow to the nicely rendered action scenes, breathing the mood of the 30's. And in this the movie greatly excels. It fast, action packed, entertaining and fun to watch. I like both Jude Law and Gwyneth Paltrow.

But it is a bit like a car missing a wheel, three wheels can drive you all the way(hence the 7), but the with the fourth one it would have been a nicer ride.

(by the way: someone said the plane Law flew is a spitfire: i am pretty sure it is not: looks more like a Curtiss P-40 to me).
After seeing the trailers (months ago) I could not wait for this movie to come out, and I was not disappointed. Despite the poorest marketing strategy ever, I thoroughly enjoyed this film, much moreso than wavy-camera Bourne Supremacy or silly, goofy Hero. The CGI backgrounds and effects were stunning, especially considering this film consisted of not much more than a couple of actors groping about on a blue-screen set.

Most of the critics slamming this movie just don't seem to get it. You cannot compare this movie to any other action or sci-fi film because most people don't seem to understand where the idea came from. Think of the futuristic visions of sci-fi writers of the 1950's where everyone had a rocket pack, a flying car and cities were gleaming spires of art-deco stainless steel. This idea hearkens back to those times of comic books and early 1900's sci-fi, and that's what it's trying to reproduce - no more, no less. The soft-focus and somewhat muddy look of the film imitates exactly what is seen in the old black & white cliffhanger serials such as Buck Rogers and G-Men. Consider this film to be a first effort by a newcomer at a never-before attempted genre. I knew what to expect and I loved every minute of it! As for Angelina Jolie - yes, probably too little time on camera for this snooty little actress, but personally, I didn't shed any tears.

Of course, there is always a downside. The film was just a bit too dark for me. The CGI folks could have tweaked up the brightness a little. If you want to nit-pick, as with any movie, there are loads of discontinuities, many of which have already been pointed out by others in the comments and message board. Giant metal planes can't fly by flapping wings. In Shangri-La, their clothes are burned, yet Sky Captain somehow retained his bomber jacket. Sky Captain first has a revolver, then a .45 auto, then drops a revolver from the tree bridge, then comes up with a .45 again. Polly Perfect's, oops, I mean, Perkin's, camera sets off a flash inside the uranium mine, yet no camera of that era was capable of such. (Yeah, I know, they didn't have giant robots, underwater airplanes and death rays either in 1939). "Franky", played by Angelina Jolie, attacks the island of Dr. Totenkopf with one of the "flying airstrips" and barely scrapes by. Yet, at the end of the movie, another half-dozen of these things appear. Where were they when the first assault occurred? Sky Captain's airplane/submarine suffers a "blocked rudder" when trying to enter the island from underneath, yet once past the angry robot guarding the entrance, it's no longer an issue.

Sure, the plot had some unresolved issues and dead ends, too, and I could complain about the editing. But who cares, really? Overall, it's a fun, fantastic movie. I was most impressed and can't wait for a sequel.
Arresting at first but gradually trails off under the weight of its hyper-derivativeness and anxiety to please.
The two vials contained the material for Totenkopf's genetically engineered humans, his Adam and Eve. "Sky Captain" is Joe's call-sign, or pilot nickname. The story behind it remains unknown. a5c7b9f00b
