Models with very low Body Mass Index (BMI) are regarded as size 0 models. It is a measure of body fat based on height and weight of a person. BMI is calculated by taking the weight in pounds (1 kg = 2.2 pounds) and dividing it by the height in feet. For example: Weight = 45 kgs, i.e. 99lbs, and height is 59, then BMI will be: 99/5.9 = 16.7.

Should they be banned? Size-zero is a women's clothing size in the US size system. It is the UK equivalent of a size 4, and approximately translates to a bust-waist-hips ratio of 32–22–33 inches (81-56-84 cm). The use of size-zero models in advertisement and fashion shows has come under fire.

Italian fashion labels Prada, Versace and Armani have agreed to ban size zero models from their catwalks. Under the new self-regulation code drawn up in Italy by the government and designers, all models in future shows will be "full-bodied", and larger sizes will be introduced at shows.

"Unless I could drop down to that weight, they wouldn't be willing to get me more work." Green at first complied, but then quit the agency. She then, with Liberal Democrat MP Lembit Öpik, launched a campaign titled "Say No to Size Zero". They began a petition drive with the goal to put an end to size zero and underweight models on the catwalk or working in the fashion industry. They set a goal to obtain 20,000 signatures and plan to present it to the UK Prime Minister and Parliament. They are campaigning for legislation that would require regular health checkups for all models before undertaking any assignments.

Super skinny size-zero models in ads and catwalks are controversial. Are they contributing to anorexia and other eating disorders? Should they be banned?
Size-zero is a women's clothing size in the US size system. It is the UK equivalent of a size 4, and approximately translates to a bust-waist-hips ratio of 32–22–33 inches (81-56-84 cm). The use of size-zero models in advertisement and fashion shows has come under fire. The exposure to images of very skinny models may be a contributing factor to the development of eating disorders such as anorexia.
Beside aesthetic considerations the topic of models' size have become increasingly relevant. Public opinion in Western countries is increasingly aware and concerned about the potential impacts of super skinny models may have in particular in teenagers. Historically beauty was not always associated to thin men and women. You just need to look at the iconic paintings of Rubens or read the descriptions of curvy women in books from previous centuries. Being very skinny was historically considered a sign of being poor and not something most people would actively look for. Obviously the ideal of beauty has evolved since the second half of the twentieth century. Being skinny is now a trend and increasingly thinner models in advertisement and catwalks have served to consolidate this beauty paradigm shift.
The problem emerges because now being extremely think is considered a sign of beauty. Most people would like to be as similar as possible to the models and celebrities that best incarnate this new ideal of beauty. Some people practise sports or fitness to stay thin, others try diets to lose weight.  However, there is growing discrepancy between the size of average women (but also men) and those the beautiful models working for the most iconic brands. Not only in average the population in the West has become fatter, but also models are now thinner than they ever were. Additionaly in the fashion world Photoshop is used to make models in ads and front pages slimmer than what they actually are. Cases such as the latest YSL campaign have created a public outcry.
Anorexia, as other eating disorders is a socially transmitted disease. Some academic studies indicate that exposure to super skinny models may contribute to the spread of this mental condition among our youth. Teenagers look at these models as examples to follow. But, even if there is a causal, effect between skinny models > anorexia, banning size zero models is problematic and many people claims goes against freedom of expression.
Do you think government intervention is justified in this case? Is prohibition of size zero a necessary solution? How could such ban be implemented? What should be the boundaries?

I do not think a model should be banned based on their dress size, regardless of if it is smaller or larger than the average. What's this telling young girls who are naturally outside average? That they are unattractive? Unhealthy? I also find it interesting that people who would be outraged if someone said a nasty comment about a plus size model and preach body love then feel they have the right to slam people for being thin. I personally believe size should not matter and if anything there should be mandatory health checks to insure the models we see are decent role models for others and also not causing any harm to themselves. This has no relation to a number on a tag be that a 0 or 16.

They definitely should not be banned. Girls are being punished for being skinny and healthy???
#23 | MariaK 18 December 2015 @ 09:15
Apparently in France models will have to prove they are healthy rather than just be judged by how skinny they look, which seems like a step forward: http://www.theguardian.com/world/2015/dec/18/models-doctors-note-prove-not-too-thin-france

My daughter is Anorexic......I don't think she would have avoided this disease if all models were size 2 or above. First Anorexia is genetic.....if you don't have the genes you won't become anorexic. Anorexia is triggered in those who are genetically predisposed when they suffer a period of negative calorie intake. Maybe a diet, maybe an illness or maybe a long trip overseas where they move all the time and don't like the food. Anorexia is not caused by looking at super skinny models. Sure the thin focus culture is often responsible for the initial diet that is sometimes the trigger.....but banning thin models will do nothing to stop Anorexia. That said I think it would be nice to see the modeling industry using models of all sizes......beauty isn't a size and as a society we need t… Read more

First, anorexia is NOT a socially-transmitted disease; it is a biological, brain-based disorder that is from 50-80% genetic with rest being environmental influence. One can develop anorexia 100% independently of any thin-culture focus and studies show runway culture not to be the influence on EDs that the public thinks it is.

What the practice of elevating a body-type that occurs naturally in 5% of the population to the "ideal" does is cause most of society to be dissatisfied and that is a separate issue and one worth addressing.

I would be fine with a system for models that measures health markers and prohibits unhealthy people from modeling, but this would need to cover all models not simply thin ones. Thin doesn't equal healthy and fat doesn't equal unhealthy--le… Read more

I think they should be banned. It is ironic, or actually, ridiculous to have these young persons starving themselves to sell us stuff we don't need, many times at outrageous prices, when there is some much hunger in the world. Imagine what people who are enduring famines and real deprivation think about our models. Sometimes one can only feel shame of our Western values...
#17 | Mr Grumpy 05 June 2015 @ 13:41
I think raising awareness about anorexia is better than banning models. I don't mind if people take it against brands such as with the recent case of Yves Saint Laurent http://edition.cnn.com/2015/06/03/world/skinny-model-yves-saint-laurent-ban/
But I find it to be very unfair when people criticize the model, the person. Some of them may be actually having problems and being attacked or insulted by many would not help.
#16 | Raymond Marshall 09 May 2015 @ 03:31
i think size 0 women suck but to ban is is not cool either
#15 | cayecasado 30 March 2015 @ 15:24
Yes it should be done. I agree with what has been said about education but it is not enough to educate boys and girls to feel well about their bodies. Why are there size-zero models? Because consumers want them. How do you educate hundreds of millions of consumers in the world and tell them that size-zero models should be avoided? you can't. Ergo, command & control.
#14 | LizzieB 20 November 2014 @ 16:00
Yes, definitely, zero-size models should be banned. I don't think so many women are naturally that skinny. A few of them maybe, but these are usually very young girls. They should not be encouraged to starve themselves in order to get a job they are not even emotionally prepared to do. Images of young girls are so sexualised as well. Plus there is so much sexism in fashion, it is disgusting they are using under-aged women for these purposes.
#13 | Cayetano 11 November 2014 @ 10:18
I completely agree with Juanan, It is a wrong message, unhealthy, and I think that those models are not an example for anybody. Are women like that? Most of them are quite different
#12 | Darwin 14 September 2014 @ 05:56
No.

Size-zero designers should.

It's them the ones picking the models for their ridiculous designs no one in their right mind and with a healthy body would wear.
#11 | Juanan 12 September 2014 @ 12:51
What is clear is that it´s not healthy and send a wrong message, but I´m not sure if banning it is the right solution
#10 | Marta 11 September 2014 @ 17:51  McDermott (#6)
I would like to check weather your body would fit in zero size :P
#9 | Marta 11 September 2014 @ 17:50
I am maybe not so much for the banning but I definitely don't get excited with seeing super skinny models. Yes, it's the 'ideal' I was able to comply when I was 12, but since getting boobs and hips, the zero size is a distance memory. Super skinny is not matter of exercising but genes/age/and cotton-eating diet. Also, from a consumer point of view, it is really difficult to imagine how the clothes would look like with breasts under (for boys: clothes do look much different with breasts under). Finally, I would just like to see more variation in a female body types. Beauty and femininity got so many faces (and sizes!)
#8 | MariaK 09 September 2014 @ 22:14
Banning size zero can't help in the long term - plus, it also poses the question of where 'zero' starts, sizes being amenable. What should definitely be banned is the use of underage models, which is a major reason for the prominence of 'size zero' bodies.

Thank you girls!

I agree with BG, it's very important to work on education to teach girls (and boys) that it's better to be yourself and feel happy about who and how you are, but it's also necessary to put some limits, which sometimes means banning.

#4 | BG Canada 05 September 2014 @ 13:33  Avenger (#3)
Education and banning together are important.

#3 | Avenger 05 September 2014 @ 11:36
Banning does not seem the best approach. Education is more effective

Anorexia is an awful and complicated disease. As a Society we are very bad at telling young people how beautiful they are being themselves. Instead we are pressuring them to want to be like these models in magazines, on internet, on TV... One of the important duties for any Government is to protect "weak" people, especially young people who can be wrongly influenced because they are still growing and discovering who they are. So yes anything that promotes
