Your teenager may want to make their own money, but there are pros and cons to consider when your kid wants a part-time job.
There comes a point in everyone's lives when they want to start making money by getting a part-time job. Many teens want to get a part-time job once they are old enough to legally work. Though their first job may not be glamorous everyone needs to start somewhere. So many part-time jobs can be good for teens to work after school or on the weekend, but just like everything else, there are always some downsides to letting your teen work. So keep reading to discover the pros and cons of letting your teen get a part-time job.
When you allow your teen to get a job they are now dividing their time from school, hobbies, and friends to work shifts. Due to school taking a precedent this can leave your teen for working long hours on the weekend to get their time in for work.
Since they are still young their shift can take a toll on them while they try to keep up with everything else going on with their lives. Make sure to talk to your teen before you allow them to start working somewhere.
Like we mentioned before everyone has to start somewhere when it comes to entering the workforce and having a part-time job as a teen is great. Many colleges and future employees will appreciate the fact that you were responsible to handle both school and work at a young age. Starting the workforce young will also have your child wanting more for them lives and want to grow as a worker. Not only are they getting that professional work experience they can add to their resume they are also making money that is not from choirs around the house.
Everyone needs hobbies. Hobbies are something that can help people unwind and relax after a long week. If your teen gets a part-time job they can have a hard time keeping up with hobbies and extracurricular activities that they enjoy.
Whether it be an after school activity or something they do with their friends on the weekend your child needs to enjoy time doing the things that bring them joy. Talk to your teen to make sure they keep up with their hobbies and activities that make them happy.
Something that parents need to teach their kids to do while they are still young is to teach them how to properly handle money. Handling money currently is something your teen needs to know before they head off to school and move out of your life. They should be able to know how much they need to make to cover expenses like gas for their car, how to save money and to enjoy it in moderation. Allowing your teen to have a part-time job can teach them the money skills they will need for their future.
When a teen gets a part-time job they can end up working bad hours due to their limited availability. These shifts can including closing and opening back to back. These types of shifts can interfere with their sleep schedule that can make them tired throughout the day affect them in other areas of their lives.
It’s the opening and closing shift too that will have the most tasks to due as well to open or close up the store. Discuss with your teen that if they get a part-time job they might end up working hours they do not love.
When you work a job you learn valuable life skills that you will use in your daily life and at the next job you will work. Even working a part-time job will teach your child life skills they didn’t know where necessary to understand to get them far in life. Some life skills they learn are customer service, multitasking, teamwork, and many more. Make sure your teen gets a part-time job to teach them life skills they are going to need to know to be successful in their professional career and personal life.
It’s true that you are only a kid once. Even though your teen may not be that little one on the playground anymore these are times in their lives they are not going to get back. Allowing your teen to work a part-time job can make them start thinking that they have to start acting just like an adult when they are still a child. This part-time job could mean more bills to cover gas, less time with friends and hobbies they like. So let your teen enjoy their youth by not letting them get a part-time job.
If you are tired of paying your teen an allowance to spend your money on things that you do not appreciate then you need to talk to them about getting a part-time job. A part-time job is perfect for teens who want to earn their own money and have the freedom to spend it without you judging them. Your teen earning their own money can be great so they know how hard people work to receive an income. Have your child start looking around to see what stores are hiring in your area!
When you have a child in school, their main goal should be getting good grades. Getting good grades and learning trumps playing sports, extracurricular activities, and working part-time.
There can be times when having a part-time job has affected students' performance in school due to the lack of time for studying and doing homework. As a parent, you do not want your child’s grade to suffer just to work part-time somewhere. If you allow your teen to get a part-time job to make sure they know that their studies come first.
The best part about your teen working a part-time job is it teaches them responsibility. Now your child is going to have to handle customers, serving, cleaning, stocking, and whatever else their job duties are. This type of responsible and discipline will teach them how to handle being in a team and how to manage their own tasks. It’s working through these skills as a teen that can help them when they get a job after college. Let your teen learn responsibility first hand with a part-time job.
Children with mothers who were deemed more compassionate tended to be more generous.

These include promptness, how to deal with customers, and how to follow orders, as well as taking initiative and being creative within the workplace.
