Five substance-abusing friends decide to fake a kidnapping in order to bribe a police constable for covering-up a hit-and-run accident.
After the passing of her mother, and the entry of a step-mother, Amrita Jayshankar retreats into herself. Her father is summoned to her school and is told that his daughter may require counseling, but he refuses to believe and instead makes a donation to the school. Then Amrita meets with three males and a female, namely Zuben, Dushant Sahu, Karan Chaudhary; and Tanya Sharma respectively. Together they live it up with drugs and alcohol until things get out of control when they accidentally kill a couple. A corrupt police constable demands Rs.25 Lakhs to eliminate their involvement. Unable to come up with so much cash, the five decide to fake a kidnapping, demand the cash from Amrita's father, and clear their respective names. Amrita accordingly goes 'missing', and her father involves the police, who assign this case to once-suspended police inspector, Arvind Mathur. With the media getting involved, Arvind begins his investigation, but will soon find it hampered - complicating not only his assignment - but also his personal life.
The glamorous trailers, young and fresh star cast, music but the biggest of all Rajeev Khandelwal impressed me a lot in the trailers and movie too. But if we see the movie keeping in mind that it is Anurag Kashyap's flick i think the movie was disappointing. The first half of the movie is quite good and lifts up really well but too fast. The shaitan moments were there but they were way too less. The moment you will realize that you are having fun watching this one, it will take a serious turn which i think could have been delayed because the second half goes too slow showing some unimportant and regular flashbacks of Amy played by Kalki. But still movie will keep you tight because it has something very unique to offer. I mean who have ever remixed and played an old song during a shooting sequence scene in a busy market. The presence and great acting by Rajeev Khandelwal will take many girl's heart.In his few scenes,he steals the movie quietly with his funny yet serious sense of humor.Movie also have some big gaps in 2nd half which if told here will destroy your viewing experience. Although its a very normal kidnapping movie with weak script told in a stylish way. 2 out of 5 for this attempt by the makers but 1 extra for Rajeev Khandelwal and the music which will stay for a long time in your play-list.
Debutant director Bijoy Nambiar bravely treads a path that other debutant Hindi film directors steer clear of. Shot with style, 'Shaitan' is dark and twisted. Even though the story elements such as reckless teens causing a fatal road accident and teens staging their own kidnapping may have been used many times before in Hindi films. But, 'Shaitan' combines these with other story elements and does it with more grit and is given a unique treatment. The visuals look raw. The solid screenplay, sound effects and editing, the score which freshly and comically tributes many classic Hindi songs, the excellently choreographed action scenes and chase sequences create a tense atmosphere but one that is full of energy and adrenaline. Once the film gets going, especially after the accident sequence, there's always something happening on screen. Of the five actors who play the wild young friends, Kalki Koechlin stands out as the traumatized, disturbed and insensitive Amy. Rajeev Khandelwal is terrific as the no-nonsense copper determined to find Amy. Rajit Kapur and Pavan Malhotra provide great support. Rajat Barmecha makes a funny appearance. To say the least, 'Shaitan' is refreshing, dark, funny, gritty, gory and wicked. Anurag Kashyap has done it again and Bijoy Nambiar seems to be among the promising new directors of today.
