In the pilot episode of Sex and the City, Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker) and her pals attend a thirtysomething birthday party for Miranda (Cynthia Nixon), where they make a heartfelt pledge to stop worrying about finding Mr. Perfect and, instead, have sex like him. Making good on this vow, Carrie dabbles with an ex and then meets the rakish businessman Mr. Big (Chris Noth). Miranda, meanwhile, finds herself attracted to the teddy bear-ish Skipper, and the ever-voracious Samantha (Kim Cattrall) beds a bloke who Charlotte (Kristin Davis) wouldn't get horizontal with on the first date.
In this episode, three of our plucky heroines have romantic run-ins with "modelizers" -- a nickname Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker) coined for men who only date fashion models. Miranda (Cynthia Nixon) is going out with Nick (Josh Pais), but doesn't understand his lack of enthusiasm until she discovers his obsession with models. Samantha (Kim Cattrall) also finds herself dating a "modelizer," Barkley (Gabriel Macht), and while she's able to break through his resistance, she also discovers another of his quirks -- recording his sexual conquests on videotape. Carrie decides to do some research of her own on the subject by dating a male model named Derek (Andre Boccaletti), though she still has a more than passing interest in Mr. Big (Chris Noth).
While staying as a guest at a couple's swank home in the Hamptons, Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker) finds herself in a delicate position when her married male host decides to show her the family jewels. Back at the ranch, Samantha (Kim Cattrall) gets cozy with her doorman; Charlotte (Kristin Davis) shows her WASP heritage by dumping a good guy with an undesirable china pattern; and Miranda (Cynthia Nixon) learns that her law firm co-workers think she's a lesbian.
Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker) and Samantha (Kim Cattrall) both find themselves going out with younger men; Carrie discovers there's a downside to dating a man a decade younger than herself, no matter how handsome he is, while Samantha finds dating a "boy toy" only makes her feel like the "older woman." Meanwhile, Charlotte (Kristin Davis) thinks she's met the perfect man -- until she discovers his sexual tastes are not at all what she expected.
Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker) receives an unexpected pay-off from a French architect she goes out with, while Charlotte (Kristin Davis) receives pay-off of a different kind when she models for a famous painter. Miranda (Cynthia Nixon) finds herself the object of Skipper's sexual obsession.
Miranda (Cynthia Nixon) learns a secret about her latest man, while Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker) is convinced that Mr. Big (Chris Noth) is keeping her a secret from his friends. Charlotte (Kristin Davis) tells a secret to a godly individual, and Samantha (Kim Cattrall) continues to revel in her own lack of discretion.
Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker) discovers that while she and Mr. Big (Chris Noth) have been dating for a while, she considers it an exclusive relationship and he does not, which angers and confuses her. Miranda (Cynthia Nixon) breaks up with Skipper (Ben Weber), but when she sees him on a date with another woman, she starts to have second thoughts. Charlotte (Kristin Davis) finds her boyfriend's sexual appetite is more than she wants to deal with. And Samantha (Kim Cattrall) deals with a different sort of monogamy issue: while apartment hunting, should she remain loyal to one realtor or play the field?
Poor Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker); not only does she find out that Big (Chris Noth) was married, but an encounter with his ex-wife reveals her to be attractive and successful. Carrie's additional discovery that Big and the ex-Mrs. Big once participated in a threesome resonates with her friends: Charlotte's (Kristin Davis) boyfriend wants to bring another woman into their bed and Samantha (Kim Cattrall) is unnerved when she realizes she has become a bit more involved with a married couple than she intended. Meanwhile, Miranda (Cynthia Nixon) feels left out of all the action.
Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker) is not at all happy when Mr. Big (Chris Noth) informs her that he intends never to marry again, leading her to think twice when Stanford Blatch (Willie Garson) asks her to marry him so he'll be able to collect an inheritance. Samantha (Kim Cattrall), on the rebound after a bad breakup, starts dating a frumpy looking guy called The Turtle (Tim Wheeler), but the more she tries to change his appearance, the more obvious it is that he's not about to change. Miranda (Cynthia Nixon), still on her own, obtains a special new vibrator known as "The Rabbit." She makes the mistake of lending it to Charlotte (Kristin Davis), who becomes so thrilled with its effects that she is hard-pressed to leave her apartment.
The girls attend a baby shower where their host, a former good-time girl who exchanged her miniskirts for a minivan, reveals that she longs for the liberation of her pre-nuclear family days. This leads Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker) and the gang to ponder their respective futures: Carrie is late for her period but can't decide whether or not being pregnant would be a good thing, while Charlotte (Kristin Davis) is frightened that she may never have the daughter she has always wanted.
Newspaper relationship columnist Carrie Bradshaw draws on her own experiences and those of her friends to document the highs, lows and woes of dating. Her friends include cynical Miranda, hedonistic Samantha and prudish Charlotte. The series opens with Carrie vowing to stop searching for Mr. Right and instead make do with Mr. Right Now. But, her plan to stay emotionally detached soon falls by the wayside when she meets the elusive Mr. Big, who comes in and out of Carrie's life.

Though stylishly directed, Sex and the City isn't especially funny, and it isn't as campy as Melrose Place in its prime.
Beyond the shock value (and how shocking is sex on pay-cable these days?), it's a hollow shell of a sitcom.
Who cares about yet another batch of whiny New Yorkers? I've had enough. Besides, I think Star has merely brought a Melrose Place with nudity to the place where he could get away with it -- cable...
Sex and the City tries hard to be provocative, but it's mostly just a big tease.

What's refreshing about Sex and the City is that it pushes to a darkly comic extreme... More social satire than sitcom, it looks openly at relationships steeped in ambivalence, fear, and the games people play.
From the constant smoking to the constant whining, Star, who wrote several of the scripts, has again given his actors dialogue and plot lines that make it virtually impossible for them to do anything but laboriously go through the motions.

I liked this programme; at least it's not set in the smooth, psychologically unthreatening world of mainstream TV drama. It's full of bad people you're supposed to like, or at least fancy.
The book had a dark, uneasy edge... The TV series has turned the thing on its head, and made it meaningless.
I thought Sex and the City was a witty, focused, professional bit of entertainment and a pretty damn horrible view of mankind. I don't know people like that. I don't know people in New York like that.
Only Parker's lively work and exotic looks give you a reason to watch a comedy that ultimately is as shallow and cliched as most of the toxic bachelors in it.

Sex and the City has so much going for it. An alluring title. An equally alluring cast, headed by Sarah Jessica Parker and Kim Cattrall. HBO's sensitivities and enhanced liberties. Alas, it falls short of getting the job done.
This is the romantic comedy thinking adults have been waiting a long time for and HBO delivers.
It's great and fun, fun, fun! Women and gay men will love it. If you are easily offended... you may not.
Apparently the show got better with time which I suppose it does when a character can develop, did you know they originally considered Cybill Shepherd and Roseanne for parts in this show. Well they both where still very famous than and both hot of successful shows, and both very sexy dont laugh Roseanne lost all the weight and looked great in 1998. I'm not fond of the Casting they went with but I do love the backdrop of New York City in the 90s thats amazing I know it was 98 but still you get to see the end of the 90s in NYC as an Irish boy that's amazing, the show could have been taken in a totally different Direction, I personally would have had a goth or punk chick in the line up, as time went on the show became more mature and I don't mean it had more sex or became cheesy I mean like a fine wine it became more sophisticated, no more smoking spliffs in grungy bars or tarty outfits as such, but I don't think it became more sophisticated because they grew up who wants to grow up I think it was because the 90s ended, and the first season which is the only one I like was considerd Rotton see what I did there. But yea 90s fashions and 00 fashions chalk and cheese. That's twice I mentioned cheese now.
Everything good about this show and bad about Carrie's character is perfectly layed out in season 1. The show is a sort of comic satarie about the dating life in late 90's New York but puts it's emphasis on the women side represented by four very different yet similar-in-type friends: Carrie - the hopless romantic struck back only by her insecurities (and boundry issues), Miranda - the true feminist, her though shell hides a kind soul ever looking to find love without getting hurt, Samantha - "the one that loves sex" as she spends 80% of her screen time either doing it or looking for it AND Charlotte - "the naive" dreams of fairy tail life with a kind man, some kids and a dog. The jokes are way to open for normal day to day chat and that's why it works - anyone who's seen a few dates get's it.
Looking at the early SATC episodes now, Carrie seems so selfless and immature for a young woman with a great career in New York City. She had no savvy and her morals were more like a no-future 15 year old with no filter and new-found freedom. They can try to reframe the character as a liberated person, but looking back she was bound by her own insecurity. Thankfully the later episodes had more substance.
With a cast full of chemistry, Sex And The City season 1 presents us an interesting story combined with fun and some great moral lessons.
