Scott Pilgrim must defeat his new girlfriend's seven evil exes in order to win her heart.
Scott Pilgrim (Michael Cera) is an unemployed 23-year-old hipster in a going-nowhere garage rock band who is dating an underage 17-year-old high school girl, Knives Chau (Ellen Wong). He is completely self-absorbed and oblivious anyone else's needs but his own until one day Ramona Flowers (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) becomes the object of his obsessions for basically no reason. Ramona is a shrill, unlikable, damaged hipster who is only likable to Scott. No one knows what her past is, but Scott will find out very soon as he tries to make Ramona his new girlfriend, cheating on his devastated underage girlfriend. Before Scott can begin dating Ramona, he must prove himself by defeating the league of her seven exes who control her love life. They will do anything to get rid of and destroy any new boyfriend Ramona may consider. If Scott wants to find true love with Ramona, he must defeat all seven, faster than you can say "career ender"
I have a theory - there are two kinds of movie; the kind where you engage your brain and soak the movie up like a good book, and the other where you disengage your mind and let it wash over you as an experience. Scott Pilgrim is mostly about the experience, with our hero being a geeky, dorky heart-breaker forced to defeat his new girlfriend's exes in fight scenes more reminiscent of Manga than Hollywood action movies.

I personally really enjoyed this film, and watched it without having seen any trailers, reviews and what-not. If you decide to check the other reviews posted here, please skip over the wordy, self-indulgent, overly serious ones - these reviewers should check out a nice fun film like Taxi Driver for their style of reviewing instead!

After having seen a stupid number of films both English language and foreign, never discounting any type of movie, except maybe a certain flavour of US comedy (romantic comedies and the mainstream slapstick that's made for dumb-dums), I have to say that I found this quite refreshing, not taking itself too seriously on any level unlike many, many films crammed with excessive posing and "cool" one-liners.

Scott Pilgrim Vs The World makes for a very different experience to most movies, and has more in common with manga, martial arts and 80's pop-culture movies, with video-game references splattered throughout, and probably won't be "got" by everyone.

Initially I found the lead, Michael Cera to be quite dorky and a little bit wet behind the ears, and the dialogue a bit vague. But then the craziness kicked in, I grasped the intent of the film, disengaged my brain, laughed out loud frequently, and forgot about everything else.

Visually and sonically, this does great justice to it's manga/video game references, and having come away from reading Manga moments before, I was massively pleased by the style imbued throughout. I thought the cast were well chosen for their parts, with moments of almost inconsequential non-dialogue between characters, and utterly dry, deadpan delivery at others, with no actor taking themselves too seriously. The self-awareness that pervades US comedy acting was thankfully muted in this movie - I can't stand it when comedy thinks that it's funny before it's delivered the 60th punchline in as many seconds (to the makers of Family Guy - you're just too desperate to make me laugh, and end up failing miserably with your back to back lines!).

I truly believe that this is a love it or hate it film, crammed with references and visual touches lifted straight from Manga, Video game and Pop-culture (with love), made to bring much dryness, fun and colour to movie-goers. To the makers of this movie -

Please can I have some more like this?....

-it goes REALLY well between the serious stuff that I also enjoy watching!
Scott Pilgrim vs. the World is an entertaining and funny movie, but it did not leave me completely satisfied, because it contains more style than substance.

The screenplay from Scott Pilgrim vs. the World is not very logical, and it only works as an excuse to bring a constant parade of imaginative scenes full of likable visual details, from the onomatopoeia from the comics (POW, SOCK) to fights filmed with the Mortal Kombat style, with a marker, "combos" and an imperative narrator ("Fight!"). However, Edgar Wright's energetic direction, the irreverent humor and the good performances were enough to keep me entertained, despite the hollow screenplay and the lack of real emotions which should be inspired by the characters.

I know that Michael Cera has many haters with his eternal attitude of a sensible nerd; I am not of those people, and I found him perfect in the leading role from Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, because his energy and affable personality made me to like his character. Some people may say that Cera does not have a very good physical development during the action scenes, but I do not think that is something negative, because that fits into the epic fantasy from his character.

The rest of the actors also fits perfectly into their characters: Mary Elizabeth Winstead is absolutely credible as a "geek" girlfriend; Kieran Culkin is funny as the main character's homosexual friend; and Anna Kendrick achieves a perfect combination between the affection and exasperation her character has with her brother. And I could go on mentioning the whole cast, because all the actors fit well on their characters.

So, in conclusion, I had a good time while watching Scott Pilgrim vs. the World; I just wish it had endorsed its gags, visual tricks and pop references with bigger narrative and emotional substance. In summary, I liked it, but I found it to be a bit hollow.
This is a discouragingly limp movie in which nothing is at stake.
Scott Pilgrim vs. the World is based on the graphic novel series Scott Pilgrim by Canadian cartoonist Bryan Lee O'Malley. Six Scott Pilgrim books were first published between 2004 and 2010. The movie's title comes from the second volume of the series but is an adaptation of all six volumes. It's called "I Heard Ramona Sing" by Frank Black. "Invaders Must Die" by The Prodigy

The short trailer features the song "Ramona" by Beck.

The full trailer has music by the fictional Sex Bob-Omb and "It's Getting Boring by the Sea" by Blood Red Shoes.

"Black Sheep" by Metric

Beck is playing the role of Sex Bob-omb.

Kevin Drew and Brendan Canning are writing the music for rival bands Crash and the Boys. There is an article about the music here. The time span can be surmised by the number of changes in Ramona's hair colour, which she states that she changes "every week and a half". Scott meets Ramona during the last few days of her "pink hair" cycle, before she goes blue for most of the film. She then change's her hair green at the end. The "blue hair" cycle was the only full cycle shown, so the time span of the film is between one and a half to two weeks (three at the most). Another hint to the time span is how Ramona kept mentioning how her relationships also only lasted a week and a half. As such, it can be surmised that a week and a half passed when she breaks up with Scott and returns to Gideon (hence the green hair in her next scene) Based on the landmarks present within the film (Honest Ed's, Lee's Palace, Casa Loma), the film primarily takes place in and around the Annex neighborhood in the central part of the city. Honest Ed's is a popular department store in the area and is visible in the background of many shots. There really is a Pizza Pizza restaurant across the street (though the interiors are different than seen in the film). Lee's Palace is a popular live music venue and it is located about two and half blocks east of Honest Ed's. Casa Loma is an actual castle located about three kilometers (about two miles) north of both landmarks and can quickly accessed by either subway or bus. There really is a steep staircase that must be climbed to reach Casa Loma from the south. The Annex is also home to The Bloor Cinema, a repertory cinema where Edgar Wright hosted screenings during production of the film. The school used in the film is St. Michael's College School, located at Bathurst St. and St. Clair Avenue West. Sometimes, but rarely in the amount seen in the film. However, it's not uncommon for that level of snow to be present during the winter. a5c7b9f00b
