The year is 2018. There is no crime and there are no more wars. Corporations are now the leaders of the world, as well as the controllers of the people. A violent futuristic game known as Rollerball is now the recreational sport of the world, with teams representing various areas competing for the title of champion. The defending championship team, the Houston team led by the determined ten-year veteran Johnathan E., is looking to repeat as champions. However, Bartholomew, the sinister corporate head, wants Johnathan to retire, even though he is the most respected athlete of his time. Johnathan's rebellious quest will not come out with complications, both for him and his teammates, after he decides to continue playing despite Bartholomew's threats.
In a futuristic society where corporations have replaced countries, the violent game of Rollerball is used to control the populace by demonstrating the futility of individuality. However, one player, Jonathan E., rises to the top, fights for his personal freedom, and threatens the corporate control.
Set in a future world where there are no countries, just giant corporations which provide for everybody's needs. The sport of Rollerball is the dominant entertainment and Jonathan E, of the Houston team, is its star player... and that is a problem as the game is designed so that no one player becomes a star. The game is a brutal, full-contact cross between roller derby, speedway and basketball as players, some on skates others on motorbikes, race round a circular track trying to put a heavy metal ball into a small goal. After yet another victory for Houston corporate executive Bartholomew approaches Jonathan and tells him it is time to retire... something Jonathan isn't ready to do. As the next game approaches he tries to find out why the executives want him out of the game. So much so that they change the rules to make a dangerous game even more dangerous.

This 1975 classic is set just over forty years in the future... in this year: 2018. Given that fact it has aged surprisingly well; the only scenes that seem really dated are those featuring a '70s view of what computers would look like in 2018. The strength of the film is the game itself; it may be more brutal than any real sport but it makes sense; there are clear rules and strategies so it feels like a real sport. The action is exciting, often disturbing and looks like a real match not like actors playing sportsmen. The story is effective although it might have been nice if we could have been told more of how the world changed to become how it is depicted... that said a sense of mystery beats a poor explanation. James Caan puts in a fine performance as Jonathan; it is clear that he is doing almost all of his stunts. The rest of the cast are solid; most notably John Beck who plays Jonathan's friend and teammate Moonpie and John Houseman who plays the quietly menacing Bartholomew. Overall I'd certainly recommend this to fans of speculative fiction; sci-fi that is more about people than technology.
The premise to Rollerball is good: set in the near future, war and hatred have been defeated, and all violence is channeled onto a corporation run ball game. The problem is it takes an hour before any real action starts, the writers being too interested in Caan's personal conflicts and the corporations desire to see him retire (otherwise it might mean the end of the game as they know it). The most effective scene in this first hour is a group of upper-class revellers (who you wouldn't normally associate with violence) having just seen one of the games, start blowing up fir trees in a fit of drunken bloodlust. It's quite a dark film in a Pre-Robocop kind of way, and similarly entertaining (the fast paced, well staged rollerball sequences were interesting, and reminded me of Solarbabies and Mad Max, but they are few in number). More effort should have gone into the editing: there were a lot of pointless scenes, needless panning shots, and over use of baroque music. It will really test your patience, despite some brilliant acting. It's worth the wait in the end though: a deadly showdown in which the sport becomes all out war where only the strongest will survive

The players on roller skates can use force against one another but to attack a motorbike rider or a roller skater who has fallen to the ground is a foul and punished by three minutes out of the arena. If injured a player can be rescued by medics and replaced by a substitute. a5c7b9f00b
