Roman military tribune Clavius remains set in his ways after serving 25 years in the army. He arrives at a crossroad when he is tasked with investigating the mystery of what happened to Jesus following His crucifixion. Accompanied by trusted aide Lucius, his quest to disprove rumours of a risen Messiah makes him question his own beliefs and spirituality. As his journey takes him to places never dreamed of, Clavius discovers the truth that he's been seeking.
In 33 AD, a Roman Tribune in Judea is tasked to find the missing body of Jesus Christ who rose from the dead.
I didn't have much hope for this film when I DVR'd it; I felt it was just going to be another of these recent Christian films which are fine for the Born Again, but leave most of the rest of us cold. I was wrong. This was a pretty good (though not great) film, in part because it doesn't follow the usual Christian-film format.

First, Jesus looks a little more like Jesus may have actually looked. He doesn't look like Jeffrey Hunter, for example.

Second, much of the film is more like a detective mystery with Roman tribune Joseph Fiennes trying to find out what happened to the body of Jesus after it disappeared from the tomb. He is sent on his mission by Pontius Pilate (Peter Firth), and is assisted by Tom Felton.

Fiennes' performance has been criticized by some as being too stoic. Perhaps. But then again, once he is convinced that Jesus is something special, he does not allow his performance to devolve into some blathering fool, but rather as person trying to figure out what is going on and what his place in it is. I think it's a good, balanced performance.

In terms of the other actors, no one stands out, although all do their jobs satisfactorily. This is very much Fiennes' film.

Overall this general story is too familiar for most of us to enjoy another film about it, bus as I indicated, this film tackles the story in a different way. It's worth a look.
Of course there is the expected religiosity of the beginnings of Christianity. On those grounds alone, this movie is unremarkable. However, there are several details that really make the moving interesting. For example, in the images of crucifixion, the nails are through the wrist rather than the palm, and the wooden washer is visible (to keep the victim from pulling free). Also, throughout the movie, Jesus is called Yeshua, the more proper translation of the Hebrew. The main theme of the story is the transition of Clavius (Joseph Fiennes), a roman tribune, from a follower of Mars to a believer in Christianity. The movie includes the origin of the Shroud of Turin, which is cute, but probably unlikely. The story contains several references to events mentioned in the New Testament, but of course there are many parts of the story that are merely speculation. Nevertheless, the movie is very watchable to all but the most ardent atheist.
Yes, it’s aimed at believers. But Reynolds & Co. avoid the traps of Mel Gibson’s movie and many others by making these times horrifically real, but these Biblical figures and what they were about compelling in their kindness, soft-selling their message so sweetly that even a Roman with blood on his hands will question his Empire, his religion and his way of living before all is said and done.
