Professor Sydney Fox is head of the archeology department at Chicago University. She can inspire her students very well, but is often absent on short notice, unable to resist the call of the field, which is however tolerated because it can pay off big for the university's museum as she's a world-class relic hunter. Her scholarly brilliant English academic assistant, Nigel Bailey, has his reservations about being dragged along all over the world on most of her treasure hunts, but puts up with the risks and inconveniences of the guests out of a sense of duty and because of the appeal the athletic lady adventurer seems to have on most men in the series. The third permanent cast member is their office secretary, during most seasons vain airhead Claudia whose rich father is frightfully well-connected, notably with the chancellor, later the far more competent Karen Petrusky; both usually stay in college, minding things there and doing some research, booking etcetera, but on occasion also get to play a more active part, and in both cases tend to make use of their female charms too. While each episode is a treasure hunt on its own, some other characters recur twice or more, mainly rival relic hunters and/or personal acquaintances, such as Sydney's many former lovers, a secret agent and Nigel's brother.
With the help of her faithful assistant from England Nigel Bailey the university professor Sydney Fox moonlights as a relic hunter. Together they travel around the globe in search for stolen relics to be returned to museum always risking their lives.
Unfortunately not one of the "so bad that it's good" series, just plain so bad that it's bad. Every Lara Croft/Indy Jones cliché in the book thrown at exotic locations (I'm guessing back lot of the studios or a 20 mile radius) and insular representations of other peoples that would have the natives cringing in disbelief.<br/><br/>Tia Carrere could shatter any plank of wood with one kick - but the plank would always come away with the acting honors. Hugh Grant should sue for the foppish buffoon "Nigel" character that's been based on his every mannerism, they've even stolen his hair-style.(I've often wondered why we can only see Brit's as evil geniuses or diffident cowards - isn't it time we updated these unpleasant representations given that they're our only effective allies these days? We're way nicer in our cultural cliché's to the French than we are to the Brit's. Something wrong there!)<br/><br/>I know it's a Canadian production (probably with US co-production money) and it's supposed to be pure Bubble-gum but it's depressing that every show directed at a US audience has to reinforce every asinine cliché about other cultures for the benefit of the most bigoted hick.
This is the type of show I really enjoy and in view of previous comments I have read I must say how much I have enjoyed Lindy Booth in the series - she is just so funny!. I am pleased that all of season 2 is now available on DVD and hope that season 1 will be released soon. Love it!
