Jim Belushi plays a super-competent secret agent on the trail of Russian thugs. John Ritter plays a milquetoast dad who gets mixed up in the caper. The story follows their adventures over the course of a week, in which Ritter develops some guts and Belushi gets in touch with his sensitive side.
A womanizing CIA agent and an insecure insurance agent are paired together to make sure a deal goes through with aliens for the future of mankind.
I think the only reason this hasn't made it onto the "worst 100" list is because no one's ever heard of it. Or perhaps former viewers brains, in a desperate attempt to save themselves from febrile nightmares for years, simply erased it from their memories. No, really; a couple of weeks after seeing this piece of schlock my friend and I saw a poster for it in a video store and he couldn't even remember it.

I can't even figure out where to start describing how bad this movie is. It seemed to start off OK, but within maybe 2 or 3 minutes it just fell completely flat. It tries to be funny through absurdity, which can work out just fine if you do it well, but in this case it was just unbelievably lame. The story simply wasn't funny, it was just dumb. They tried to add some "direct humor" with jokes and setups, but they were even dumber. So we end up with a continual stream of horribly telegraphed "jokes", none of which were funny even if we didn't see them coming. And to add to the insult, the delivery and timing was all over the place.

I have to agree with the other reviewer in that Ritter can be under-appreciated, but even though he actually seemed to be trying (unlike Belushi, who couldn't be bothered), nothing could possibly save this movie. It's simply so stupid that I couldn't help feeling the joke was on me, that some jaded burned-out exec in Hollywood was laughing at MY stupidity for thinking that a movie with two "stars" couldn't be THAT bad. Maybe he's still laughing today, judging by the continual stream of garbage that's come out over the last couple of years.

Really, don't see this movie, it's not even good as camp.
I loved this when it was released and I still love it today. This is an intelligently witty and wacky romp in The Twilight Zone. Every style of comedy is catered for from wordplay to slapstick; satire to sarcasm.

The main storyline is that aliens exist and we have been talking to them for awhile. They are willing to save our planet from certain destruction or we can have a big gun! So, of course, our hero's CIA Agent Nick Pirandello, played super-coolly by James Belushi, and everyday-Joe Bob Wilson, played brilliantly by John Ritter, who's a look-a-like for a dead agent, set off across America to make the deal. All the ET's want in return is a glass of water.

Along the way, Nick and Bob have to deal with quite a few obstacles, such as the Russians and the CIA Clown Squad. It also turns out to be a spiritual trip for the pair as Nick gets in touch with his feminine side while Bob builds his self-confidence and becomes a stronger person.

Even though the Dream Quest Images carried out the special effects the only really good effect is the space pen. Which isn't actually a hindrance as it's the comedy that makes this film.

One scene that's stayed with me is the cigarette after sex sketch where Nick and the Russian Agent come out of the back room smoking.

Nick says, "I'm really trying to give up smoking... I only smoke after sex" Bob, "That's not too bad." Nick, "Well... I'm down to twenty a day!"

Also, the scene where Bob meets Nick's family had me rolling around in bouts of laughter.

I would recommend this to lovers of comedy. This is one of my favourite films and I will be watching it a lot more in the future as it always brings a smile to my face and a laugh to my voice.
