A look at the relationship between two lawyers: a young prodigy (Baruchel) and his mentor (Johnson), a jaded defense attorney.
Genius David 'Skip' Ross skipped enough classes to still graduate from law-school at 19. Yet he can't find a job, except with dodgy run-down lawyer Grant Cooper, for whom Skip's brother Tom caddies. Skip takes on the defense of Paradise Colvin, who confesses her guilt privately to him. Skip continues, nevertheless, to do what Grant dared not, ever since the powers that be grounded him for defending a public enemy. However book-smart skills don't suffice, especially with such an uncooperative client, who even confesses again.
Skip's own mother claims he should look for 'better' work, but a rich law school classmate is jealous that he actually pleads in court. Skip learns Grant's 'secretary' Dee works there, for parole purposes, because he pleaded guilty while she wasn't. Skip insists on taking the case of Zeke Rawlins, who was arbitrarily arrested after a gang member was shot during a shop's seventh hold-up.
Skip Ross graduated from law school with honors at 19, only to find no firm will let him do all what he, in youthful naivety, wants: plead so justice be done in court. So the prodigy accepts a partnership with his antipode: Grant Cooper has the worst reputation and honor nor reputation. In every case Grant's cynical, pessimistic pragmatism clashes with Skip's simplistically noble virtue and legal brilliance. Yet their LA clients, usually too poor to afford a decent firm, are served surprisingly well. Kate Manat, second only to him in class, chose a subservient, well-paid job in a prestigious firm, but envies Skip being a trial lawyer.—KGF Vissers
First-run episodes aired on the WB attracted an audience averaging 50 years; the network, seeking a much younger demographic, quickly canceled the show.
The biggest problem with this show wasn't the writing, the acting or the concept. It was simply aired by the wrong network. I'm a huge Don Johnson fan and this part was perfect for him. If only his old network (CBS - "Nash Bridges") had picked it up I believe there would have been a fan base just waiting to embrace it. On another level, it's also a shame NBC...a network looking for a way out of the rating basement...could have possibly seen this show become one of their few winners this season because their demographics are probably far more "mature" than the WB's. It's not a show for very young viewers and as such didn't belong on the WB network at all. It never really stood a chance languishing there.

For me...this is a show that will be missed.
