En août 1494, le médecin et géographe Jérôme Münzer quitte Nuremberg, accablée par la peste, pour entreprendre, jusquau mois davril 1495, un voyage à travers la France, l’Espagne et le Portugal. Le texte présenté ici, traduit du latin à partir de l’édition donnée en 1920 par Ludwig Pfandl, dans la Revue hispanique, concerne les parties espagnole et portugaise du voyage. À travers son récit, bâti à partir de notes prises tout au long du trajet, Münzer fait partager sa découverte des pays de la péninsule ibérique fort peu de temps après l’annus mirabilis que fut 1492, où la « découverte » de l’Amérique survint en même temps que la fin de la Reconquête. Il offre un tableau passionnant des populations et de leurs mœurs, alors que chrétiens, juifs et musulmans se côtoyaient encore. Il dépeint les villes (Barcelone, Madrid, Lisbonne), les monastères et sanctuaires (Montserrat, Poblet, Guadalupe, Saint-Jacques-de-Compostelle), présente les aspects économiques et culturels, permet de rencontrer les grands personnages de l’époque, comme les Rois Catholiques.
