Book Title: Penguins by Anne SchreiberShort Description of book: This is an All About book for Penguins. I love the illustrations and the captions in the book. Young readers will find out interesting facts about these birds that don’t fly. They will also be introduced to nonfiction text features such as: table of contents, pictures with captions, maps, vocabulary and a picture glossary.Focus: I plan to introduce this book during our nonfiction writing of our All About _______ books. Also, another alternative would be to introduce this and talk about the nonfiction features and compare it to a fiction penguin book (Mr. Popper’s Penguins). Then, the students could create a compare/ contrast story. I think this would work better with upper elementary though (maybe late 2nd or 3rd grade).Teach: In early spring, we start our nonfiction writing. I will spend some time reading aloud books that are great examples of All About ________. I will read aloud Penguins! And we will discuss the nonfiction text features that we see in this book. I will make an anchor chart and students can take notes in their writing journals of important text features (like Table of content page, photographs with captions, maps, and a glossary). We will create a class All About______ book (I will also show them my All About Flute book that I wrote to provide another example). This class story can be bound and placed in the classroom library so the kids can have access to this example. In learning teams, each will research and study a type of bird, reptile, insect, amphibian, fish or mammal. They will spend time looking for specific information such as: body characteristics, habitat, diet, and any other interesting facts. They will note this on chart paper (divided in 4 cells). Each child will have a specific job (recorder will write). After a few days of research and working on their chart paper together, we will share our findings. We did gallery walks last year and the students LOVED looking at each team’s charts. Students used post-it notes to compliment other teams on their hard work. From this assignment, we then used the information and they created their own All About book.Expected Outcomes: CCSS W1.2: Students will write informative/explanatory texts in which they name a topic, supply some facts about the topic, and provide some sense of closure.
