No doubt about it, this is a kids manga. But much like Shugo Chara (a magical-girl manga by the lovely ladies who brought us Zombie Loan), its charm is such that adults can love it, too.Ive read this premise before - human child somehow accidentally enrolls in a school for non-humans and has to keep the fact that theyre secret human. But whereas Rosario+Vampire was all about the panty flashes and boobs being pressed in faces and the harem of hot monster chicks all wanting to go out with the idiot retard human kid (surprisingly, season one of the anime was really entertaining and I watched it all despite the obnoxious fan service), Animal Academy retains a sweet innocence and can concentrate on the plot, not using fan service for a gimmick to lure in those 14-yr-old boys.And it works - this is almost a slice-of-life manga about this 15-yr-old girl (who looks about 10 in the manga) and her magical animal friends, but the plot thickens. Ive read through vol. 4 at this point, and good golly, theres a lot of mystery going on. Whoooooo is that white snake? Is the heroine really human after all? Are the twins who they say they are, and what is the evil one doing, and how will the good one stop him? I also cant wait to see what happens with the heroines school club every chapter, since she joined the frickin ninja club, and all of the ninja club students are cats. Its great.One interesting thing - since this is aimed at kids, things are translated pretty simplistically. I agree with the decision, since trying to explain what a tanuki or a kitsune is to little kids would be interesting and most likely commercially unsuccessful, but it took a little getting used to seeing these OBVIOUS spirits/gods/whatever they are described instead as magical animals. Its not a kitsune, its a magical fox. Its not a tanuki, its a magical raccoon. They are definitely leaving out the thing with the balls, heh heh. Theres about a million different cat spirits, so Im not sure which one specifically is used in this manga, but Im ok with magical cat, even though Im curious.Definitely looking forward to the next volume. I hope the series doesnt get canceled here in the US - it seems like a prime target for being dropped. Just from past experience, Im pretty good at predicting these things. I hope this time Im wrong!
