This alphabet book would be appropriate for third graders and up because of the new vocabulary in it. Many of the African animals would not be common to children so younger students would find it difficult to read. However, there are not sentences in it, only fragments saying the animal and what it is doing such as “Antbear naps.” This book introduces the students to an African animal for each letter of the alphabet, including very new animals to me such as a bushbaby, dassie, nyala, umhutu, and a xoona moth. Included in the back of the book are notes on each of the animals. This book also has bright abstract pictures of each animal!Activities1. For one of my activities after reading the book, I would have each student randomly draw the name of one of the animals that is in the book. Each student would be given time to research their animal in other books or on the internet. I would have students collect interesting facts about their animal, where it lives, what it eats, etc. which ties to science. Each student will write a Haiku poem describing their animal and draw a picture of their animal. Students will share their poems with the class.2. I would use this book to tie to a mathematics lesson. After reading the book, I would divide the students into pairs and take them outside where they would measure on the playground how big or small some of the African animals were.
