The Will to Kill is a an early suspense novel by the horror, crime, and science fiction writer Robert Bloch. While Bloch went on to fame with his 1959 novel, Psycho, and I still find his short story Everybody Needs a Little Love to be one of the best and creepiest stories Ive read, this early entry falls far short of decent quality and actually becomes an incredibly embarrassing mess.The story revolves around Tom Kendall, a man who has been experiencing periodic blackouts ever since his time in the Korean War. On one particular occasion, he blacked out only to find his wife dead. Although it was ruled a suicide, Tom has never been sure he didnt commit the murder and has been haunted by the event ever since. He is eventually able to straighten out his life enough to open a small bookstore with his new girlfriend, Kit. However, its not long before she walks out on him when he cant commit to her because of his guilt over his possible past actions. Feeling lousy about Kits departure, Tom gets loaded and picks up a girl at a bar who is subsequently murdered during another one of his blackouts. As more and more bodies stack up, Tom begins a search for the culprit even though he may find that hes the killer hes looking for.First of all, the overall story seems pretty clichГ©d. Maybe this was more original in 1954, but it doesnt hold up well anymore. It certainly doesnt provide a single scare. The writing and dialogue are as juvenile and stilted as can be. The pacing is awful. Things proceed so quickly that the reader never gets much of a sense of any of the characters or has any time to let the enigmatic goings on sink in. Some of the more action-oriented moments end up being laughably bad, as Tom is able to thwart others by the simplest means.Furthermore, there are numerous inconsistencies. Tom has a best friend, Art, who has supposedly helped him through several tough times, but the two are so aloof and distant to each other they almost seem to be strangers. Many characters hardly react to news that would be terribly upsetting. Kit doesnt seem to care at all that Tom slept with another girl the night she left. At first, the police seem quite crafty and intelligent when looking into Toms life, but after that, they cease to make any progress. Of course, at that point, Tom becomes an expert on crime and is able to find all the right people at just the right times.The further I read into this book, the worse it got. The ending wasnt even enjoyably bad; it was just bad. Id like to find something kind to say about it, but thats tough. At least it was a quick read, and, perhaps, Blochs writing got better after this. It really couldnt get much worse.
