Book description
I enjoyed this book a lot and found it very thought-provoking (as I find a lot of M.E. Braddons books). The plot is based on a marry in haste, repent at leisure theme, but it was very well done. Its not a book for unexpected plot twists (you can always guess whats going to happen), but I enjoyed the journey of getting to the resolution and watching the development of the characters, especially the heroine Ida Palliser. (view spoiler)[The book also deals with issues that are still an issue today: alcohol addiction and how to deal with a loveless marriage. It was interesting to see how alcohol addiction was treated back then - how shameful it was to those who knew about it, and how the addicts true condition had to be hidden from his family and friends. (It was regrettably necessary that the servants should find out, although if Ida could have kept them from learning the truth, she would have.) The issue of how to deal with a loveless, mercenary marriage was also interesting. Ida had once said famously that she would marry for money, and this theme weaves throughout the story with the two Brians she comes across, one rich, one poor. Neither Ida nor poverty-stricken Brian come off smelling like roses in their marriage - she suddenly married a man she didnt love because she thought his station in life and the abbey he lived at would be good for her and her family, and shed just been unfairly expelled from school and had nowhere to go but back home where she would be a financial burden upon her family. In other words, it seemed like a good idea at the time. To her credit, she wasnt all about the money - his supposed wealth and station made her think him better than he was. (Proof of this is that she had just turned down a marriage proposal from a rich doctor - if she was completely mercenary and only cared about money, she would have married him, but she realized she couldnt sell herself in that way.) The poor Brian pretended to be the rich Brian and didnt tell her the truth until after the wedding. Aghast at hearing the truth, Ida leaves, and they go their separate ways for a year. In todays society, such a twist would have been followed by an immediate divorce. Not so in this time. Ida is married, and the shackles cannot be unloosed. She feels a sense of shame at her secret, especially as shes living near her husbands family members, and knows she has to leave their pleasant society eventually to avoid that oh so awkward reunion with her husband whenever he next visits his extended family. However, the reunion eventually happens (right after the rich Brian - the one shed thought she was marrying, and whom she truly loves now - tries to propose as she begs him to forget her), and Brian publicly announces that she is his wife. The situation is explained, and while they are understanding of how the matter stands, the verdict of her friends and family is unanimous: you are married. Go therefore and live with your husband. While the poor Brian turns out to be quite a shabby deal, especially in light of how he claims Ida as his wife immediately after he hears of an unexpected inheritance her family has come into, I liked how Ida dealt with her situation. If a marriage today could not be ended for whatever reason, one would expect the unhappy spouse to sulk, rage, storm, and be generally unpleasant, to make their spouse unhappy because they are unhappy. However, Ida realizes she has to be above that - she genuinely tries to be as good a wife to Brian as she can and tries her hardest to help him recover from his alcohol addiction. Some people might scoff at this, and think her a namby-pamby, weak-minded person who meekly gives in to her situation, but I dont see it that way. Rather, I feel its really a strength of mind, to overcome such a situation and be the better person, to not let personal dislike come between doing what is right. And back then, although we feel differently today, doing what was right sometimes meant enduring less than ideal marriages. (We see the same thing in Braddons book, Fentons Quest.) Its just a pity that Brian doesnt meet her halfway, and instead starts the downward spiral of destruction. We also have a good contrast in her friend Bessies life, but its a quiet contrast, one thats not rubbed in the readers face. Bessie marries a man she loves after a suitable period of waiting as established by her parents (in contrast to the sudden marriage of Ida and Brian without her parents consent). Their life is perceived by Ida like a vague rosy dream of happiness, the kind of happiness that comes from two people who love one another being evenly joined together in lifes path. We know Bessie is happy and very much improved from the frivolous schoolgirl wed first met. Its everything a marriage should be, but at such a distance, oh so far removed from Idas current situation. We just catch glimpses of it, but were caught in the maelstrom of Idas misfortunes. And finally, I am thrilled with Braddon giving the story a happy ending. LOVED LOVED LOVED the ending! :) (hide spoiler)]
