This book chronicles the cycle of changes that impacted the Falashas transformation from Ayhud, Falasha, Bet Israel and finally to Ethiopian Jews and how in the process their identity was also changed as a consequence. What is interesting is that during these cycles of changes these terms of identity were appropriated to the Falasha as pejorative epithets by their Christian compatriots. The book concludes, In this book, I have resisted the temptation to discuss in any detail the complex situation of the Falashas in Israel today. Nonetheless, it is my opinion that some of the problems encountered by the Falasha at present are a result of Israeli government officials overlooking the fact that the concept of an Ethiopian Jew is an invented twentieth century phenomenon, imposed on the Falashas by external forces. (p. 133) Shelemay is quoted earlier commenting the effect of Jewish missionaries on the Falasha, This set in motion processes both in Europe and Ethiopia that irreversibly transformed the course of their history initiating a century of gross interference of foreign Jewish organizations and individuals in the lives of the Falasha.
