Book description
This book about the Gallo family and their wine empire reads like a John Steinbeck novel. It is full of passion and disputes between brothers as they pursued wealth as growers and producers in the wine industry. The author skillfully takes the Gallo family history and shows through her probing of dark aspects of the relationships and interactions within the family. Hawkes’ presents the side of winery founders Ernest and Julio’s ten year young brother Joseph most favorably. The book portrays the younger as being denied his one third inheritance of their father’s business. Ultimately there is great animosity when Ernest and Julio sue their brother for use of his own name on his own diary product, Joseph Gallo Cheese. The Gallo story shows how power and ambition can be stronger than the best of family ties. It seemed that Ernest and Julio were concerned about confusion of the Gallo trademark name being associated with cheese they felt was not quality. That was perhaps just a pretense for deeper motivations.It seems that Ernest was the strong authority directing the E & J Gallo Winery, as the head of marketing and sales, the business and political aspects; while Julio was somewhat subservient to his older brother. Julio managed the grape growing and wine producing end of the business. Joseph was just a little more than a hired manager and was eventually pushed out of the winery where when he left he built a dairy farm and held a large vineyard where he grew grapes to sell to his brothers. All was well before his brothers sued him for using the Gallo name. The court battles were ugly.The book was revealing. Published in 1993 it was written shortly after all the legal proceedings had ended. Earnest and Julio won on every front even though it seems a first amendment right to be able to use your own name. The contention of the writer is that Ernest was a strong absolute force with political and bullying power having his influence over even the judges presiding. It is also interesting that it was Ernest who protected the winery’s public image even in unscrupulous ways. In the end these family battles have been suppressed from the news even to this day. I went to Goggle and YouTube to search for information on any of these Gallo family contentions and found very little, and what was there was very sketchy. Even a search on Ernest and Julio’s brother only referenced his Joseph Gallo Farms brand and nothing about his relationship with the rest of the Ernest and Julio branches of the family.To sum up what can happen to a family where the pursuit of power and wealth prevail here are the words of Ernest at a dinner party revealing his heart as related by the author: “Listen, I have a word of advise for you”…Ernest shook his finger in warning…”Never trust your brother!” When you consider the Gallo brother’s parents and their mysterious deaths (murder-suicide), their Uncle Mike’s alleged dealings with the mob, the actions of the family during prohibition, and the brother’s children’s roles in the businesses, the read is almost a suspense narrative. But the story of E & J Gallo to the general public today is a great success story, which the author considers “a self-created myth”. And of course all three brothers are dead today and the winery is now run be Julio’s granddaughter, Gina who is a prominent personality seen in interviews and commercials of the leading winery in the world (do a Google search).
