Pediatric Pussy Exam

My childhood pediatrician thoroughly checked my vaginal area when I was five or six during a checkup. I asked my current family doctor if this was normal procedure and she said it wasn't. Am I being overly sensitive? Did my doctor violate my rights?

I may have a little insight from personal experience. I also had what I would characterize as a thorough vaginal examination when I was of a similar age. My mom was in the room with me, but I still remember how strange it felt to undergo this type of examination. It felt wrong to me. He asked me to submit a urine sample afterwards and I couldn’t give one.
Many years later, I had some mental health issues, and this incident came to mind. Did my doctor violate me? I finally asked my mother what the reason for that exam was, and I don’t even recall what it was now, but it was something altogether

Many years later, I had some mental health issues, and this incident came to mind. Did my doctor violate me? I finally asked my mother what the reason for that exam was, and I don’t even recall what it was now, but it was something altogether innocent. I think I had been itching, and probably had chiggers around the genital area. At any rate, in hindsight, I doubt that I had a full pelvic exam that day. The doctor likely closely examined me to look for chiggers and needed to physically probe around the entire region.
I completely understand the idea that such an exam may have been out of line. For me, in my five-year-old mind, it certainly felt that way. The only thing I can figure is that I came from a religious background and had an overprotective mother, and the idea of someone looking at me down there felt wrong because I’d been conditioned to believe it was wrong. With no other information to contradict that idea, in my mind it was perceived as being violated.
I was able to get past the idea of blaming the doctor and to accept that he was doing what he needed to do and not doing anything inappropriate. Asking my mom the reason helped with that.
There is another possibility here, and that is that you either have been, or suspect you have been, sexually abused at some point in time, whether long ago or recently. Sometimes memories of sexual abuse can color other memories, and make it hard to separate acceptable touch from unacceptable in your memory.
If any of these things ring true for you, I would encourage you to seek the help of a therapist. I’m certainly not meaning to imply that you have any mental health problems or have been sexually abused. I don’t know your situation. All I can say is that it reminded me of my own experience, and I felt it might help give you another perspective on what you’re experiencing. A therapist could even help you with replaying the events of that exam with the intent of being able to discuss it with a parent, if that is something you’d like to do but don’t feel able to do right now.
I wish you peace in working this out. Even if you ultimately believe that the doctor did violate you, there may be little or nothing you can gain from any accusations or legal action, for example. I encourage you to work towards forgiveness so that you can put this to rest in your own mind.
(NOTE: I realize not everyone may know what chiggers are. They are tiny little animals kind of like ticks, which burrow into the skin in warm and moist places. It’s very common for kids especially to get them just from walking through weeds or lying in the grass. I live in central Texas, and they’re common here, though probably not so much in different climates.)

This is a very interesting question. And relates to the changing concepts in medicine.
In medical school in the 20th century, we were taught that for a diagnosis, history was 85%, physical exam 10%, and lab work 5%. With the advent of increased proficieny in lab tests, this has changed.

We were taught in medical school to ALWAYS do a complete physical exam on a yearly basis. So if someone came in for a checkup, they always received a complete exam, including pelvic exam. My daughter is an internist, and used to call me with questions about female problems, because she did not do pelvic exams. I never understood this, because most abdominal pain in women is due to pelvic causes.
I vividly remember a case while in medical school. We were on the surgical ward rotation, and during rounds one day we skipped over a very attractive female patient. When we asked the Junior resident why, he said she was too much of an embarrassment to the chief surgeon. When we pressed him for the reason, he relented and told us the following story. The patient was admitted with abdominal pain. Her abdomen was examined, a diagnosis of acute abdomen made, and she was taken to surgery. Upon opening the abdomen, it was found to be completely normal. (Remember, this was before the advent of laparoscopy).
It turned out no one had listened to her chest, and the diagnosis was acute pneumonia, which can cause abdominal pain, and was in effect the cause of the patient's pain.
To complicate matters, while walking on the ward she began to cough, her abdominal incision opened up, and she had to be taken back to the operating room and re-operated to close the wound - with unsighly wire sutures, to prevent further dehiscence.
This entire situation could have been retified by a complete physical exam - which should have been done. Today, if you are going to a specialist for surgery, you will be referred to another doctor for a complete exam.
Also, my chief in Ob/Gyn was often quoted - "Always examine the patient."
So in my practice, I always examined the patient. It is good practice. And the doctor in question was probably old school, and did a physical exam.
The new doctors coming out are specialists. There are fewer general practioners, so they concentrate on the problem only. There are no more physical exams, unless you specifically go for one, or if you are scheduled for surgery.
I wonder how many diagnoses are missed now? How many of you have seen many doctors before a diagnosis is finally made? Is the new medicine really progress? Unfortunately, there are too few doctors left who are "Marcus Welby", who knew everything.
In summary, I hate rectal exams. But I feel better if on my annual physical exam I actually have one - instead of the doctor who looks at me, looks at my lab tests, and gives me a bill.
