Panda4FaH: Join the team and mine pandacoins

Prerequisites

• A computer running under Windows or Linux or OS X

• Folding at home client to download : Windows | Linux | OS X

• A Pandacoin address

Configuration

Once the software installed, you will have the choice between two operation modes.

• Default: The FaH client will work when you are not using your computer.

• Manual start: You launch the client manually and control it through FaH Control

Manual start gives you more control over your operations, and you can choose the number of CPU cores or GPU to allocate. In both cases, you can choose the intensity, in order to fold while you use your computer for normal daily tasks, or, if your machine can handle it, set the intensity to its maximal value.

If you own a mining rig, it is important to note that while your GPU cards are busy mining, your CPU is almost completely idle. You can therefore setup the FaH client in order to use CPU only. This way, it will run constantly on your rig, while you are mining, without reducing your performances.

In the folder where the software is installed, you will find two programs (binaries) called FAHClient and FAHControl. The first is the software that performs the folding and the latter is a control utility that you can use to tune your settings, either on the machine itself or remotely from another computer.

We recommend that at the first launch, you run FAHControl before FAHClient.

The dashboard looks like this:

In "Folding Slots", you see a list of available and compatible devices (CPU and GPU slots). These will first be in "readying" or "downloading" state, and then, once the task acquired, be in "Running" mode (green); this means that the slot is working on its assigned work. Work units are visible in the "Work Queue" part.

Choose the priority and power in "Folding Power" (Light / Medium / Full). Note that on a laptop, the GPU will work only if power is set to Medium or Full.

The "Configure" button, in the top left of the window, gives you access to more options. Start by setting up your account in order to be identified on the system and join our Panda Folders team:

Use your Pandacoin address as your donor name, and enter team number 234317. This way, you will be visible on the system and it will remunerate your work. Payments are sent each Saturday night (New-York time) and are proportional to your contribution and the total contribution of the team.

To earn bonus points, register and request a passkey. Click here or on the link in the Passkey area. Your unique key will be sent to you by email. Once set in your configuration, and once you returned some finished work units, you will start earning extra bonus points.

Bravo! You are now part of the team!

Visualization and screen saver

Now that you are a folder, you may want to see which molecules and interactions your computer is busy simulating. Just hit the "Viewer" button in the top right of the screen.

You can control the view with your mouse and zoom in/out with the wheel. If the molecules appear in black (your GPU may not be supporting OpenGL 2.2), press button 1 or 2 on your keyboard to change the view type to balls, balls with sticks or sticks alone. Press H to view the other commands.

Of course, you can also set this visualization as a screen saver. We trust you'll find out by yourself!
