I read this when I was very young; only in third grade, if I remember right. Robert San Souci visited my school, and at the time I was very deep into a fascination with all things medieval: castles, knights, chivalry and honor, and all things to do with Arthurian legend. So naturally, I asked for--and thanks to my parents, received--three of San Soucis books. This one was among them, and is probably my favorite.Ive re-read this dozens of times over the years, and somehow it continues to captivate me the same as the day that I read it first. The illustrations deserve mention; they are gorgeously done, perhaps not as photorealistic as some might prefer, but fitting for the subject matter. There is something mythic at work in the reflections on the Round Table, the expression on the young Arthurs face, the tangle of Merlins beard. And the story behind it is wonderful, if simply told. After all, it is a childrens book, and should not be judged otherwise. Fantastic beasts, epic battles, and beneath it all the story of a girl yearning for a different life, and finding one.When I first got it, I thought it was one of the most amazing things ever committed to paper. I like to think Im much better-read now than when I was in third grade, but this book is still magical in its own way. Sure, its not a lengthy novel with a tangled plot and a host of characters, but why should it be? Its a childrens book, and in its simplicity there is a strength that can outlast many modern works. If you pick this up and youre older than, say, ten, put yourself in that mindset again. Think of when you were young, and myths such as these were not merely myths, but things that could have happened, long long ago. Remember the awe that such tales inspired, the thoughts of such courage and bravery in the face of danger, the pure love between two that were meant, really meant, to be together, the thrill of a battle fought against the very face of evil. Perhaps then you will understand what this book is meant to be.
