After reading issue #1 of this series a couple of weeks ago, I decided that Id actually try to stay current on this series if it was any good. Since there isnt a whole arc out yet, I havent seen enough from the book yet to make a judgement on the series as a whole. This 2nd issue picks up with writer Cullen Bunn having Mystique escape some place that she has infiltrated. There are only a couple of pages of her at the beginning of the issue. There is just enough to tease you into wondering what she is up to. Then the focus shifts to Magneto checking out the morgue looking for the body of the mutant healer that was killed at the end of the 1st issue. Mags is there alone, but communicating with Psylocke via mind link. They discuss how several mutant healers have been killed lately and Psylocke suggests several more targets that might be in jeopardy. She sends Monet and Sabretooth to protect Elixer, who is someone that Ive never read a comic with him in before, and Magneto and Psylocke are gonna go protect someone else. None of the X-Men team know who is killing these healers or why. We the readers know that it is the Dark Riders, but havent discovered their reasoning yet either. Just when the story started getting good, the issue was over with leaving me wanting more. Bunn has done a good job making me want to pick up the next issue in the series, but I havent read anything truly amazing yet. The writing gets 4 stars out of a possible 5.Greg Land continues his work as the series artist. Im still not fond of the character design for Sabretooth. Land executes said design well, but the original concept should have been better. Magneto, Psylocke and Monet continue to look great. Since Psylocke is my favorite comic character, making her look great gives the artist a few extra brownie points from me. Elixer and Mystique are the only knew characters that pop up in this issue that werent in the previous one. The both look great as well. I usually dont talk about the colorist at all in my reviews, but one of the things that makes Elixer stand out to me is the wonderful job that Nolan Woodward did with the colors and lighting effects on the character. That gold really pops out at you. Every different setting looks completely different in tone because of the colors used by Woodward. Most of the time the colors are just there and not really worth mentioning, but something about the colors in this book just stood out. Lands artwork looks all the better because of the work that Woodward put in. The art gets 4.5/5 stars.This issue gets an overall rating of 4.25 stars out of a possible 5. The story in this series makes me want to see more because so far not a whole lot has happened over 2 issues. Reading this issue and having to wait several weeks before getting the next one makes me remember why I quit reading single issues years ago. I want to see more of a complete story when I sit down to read. That is rarely something that ever happens in 22 pages of a comic. I may keep reading the singles for this series, but for most titles, Im gonna stick with the collected editions that have served me well for years. If youre into singles and a fan of any of these main characters, Id say give this a read. Even if youre not a fan of single issues, but enjoy the characters, this should be a damn good collected edition when it comes out.
