In this story, Max the dog is the Kings Taster. He samples all the kings food before he eats it to make sure it is not poisoned. And he usually gets to enjoy lots of tasty left-overs, too. But, when a new chef arrives at the castle, the fussy king is not interested in the food (though Max still thinks it is delicious). What is the new chef to do!? Would trips to France, Italy and South America to learn some new recipes help? Or will it take something more?I love Kenneth Oppels novels and have been eager to read his debut picture book. I definitely continued to enjoy his style and the story was very entertaining and engaging but Im not sure it is ultimately a five-star for me. First, I just feel terrible about the idea of a dog being the kings taster (well, really, the idea of a kings taster in general!) and while nothing bad happens in this story, I just still felt a lurking shadow. Second, while I thought the reason for the kings refusal to eat was very clever and carries a message that will certainly appeal to many parents (and that many picky eaters need to hear!) Im not sure why the new chef is the one that precipitated that behavior. Finally, the illustrations, while very interesting (I especially loved all the recipe clippings incorporated into the collage art) were not always my cup of tea. Still, these minor quibbles aside, this is still a delightful read with a good message delivered in an entertaining and fun way. And I really liked the last page! ;-)
