Vanna Bonta’s book reminds me of my very first college class. Imagine a syllabus for Introduction to Poetry that lists “poems” like the Gettysburg address and music from Eminem and Lil’ Kim. My professor’s aim was to tear down our preconceived notions of what poetry was and instead show that poetry pops up in places we would least expect. Bonta expands this idea even further to show that poetry is not tied to the written word, but that non-linguistic elements of lyrical poetry are also elements of the poetry we recognize in non-linguistic forms. What do we mean when we say that a beautiful car or an animal running is poetic? How is it that linguistic characteristics seem to be so easily attributed to non-linguistic entities? This is what lies at the heart of Vanna Bonta’s discussion. Needless to say, this was a very interesting and welcome read from Vanna Bonta who shows that poetry transcends the ordinary.Bonta’s purpose is to make us understand how poetry resonates within us – clicking with us internally. Though poetry can be beautiful, the concept of poetry is both separate from and independent of beauty. She makes the point that while beauty is subjective, poetry is universal. Poetry taps into a universality that transcends mere inconsistent ideas of beauty. It also transcends just the literary. I’ve used the poetry analogy a thousand times not knowing why I use it. Admiring a Ferrari, watching Diego Maradona make a run, watching Michael Jordan dunk, it’s all poetry, but why? Vanna Bonta helps to flesh out that metaphor showing why a beautiful car is poetry, why an elite athlete’s movements are poetic. There is a science that these entities depend on which contributes to our feelings of awe. Bonta helps us to see that the real poetry is the Cosmos – the well-ordered universe. Everything else is a subset of that. Bonta says that the cosmos itself – its arrangement, its concinnity, its harmony IS itself a poem. Thus the poetry of poems, automobiles, nature is all a subset of the poetry of the cosmos.Poetry, she says, has four defining characteristics: rhythm, rhyme, harmony and concinnity. And she makes the point that all of these defining characteristics make up both literary and metaphoric poetry. Just as we notice these characteristics in a Robert Frost poem, we notice these characteristics in a beautiful car. She says, “poetry has a physics, beauty has a physics”. Lyrical poetry has a mathematical quality – rhyme, meter. It is the same with a snowflake or a baseball pitcher throwing a ball. Bonta makes a valid point. She makes the case that poetry is more universal that we are aware – something that my literature professors have been telling me for years.The book is definitely worth a read if you are looking for a fundamental understanding of how poetry disperses out of the cosmos and pervades everyday life. With her short book, Vanna Bonta not only identifies the source of all poetic forms as the magnificent and beautifully-ordered cosmos, she reunites the poetic form as we know it today with its long lost source.
