It brought him immediate fame and was hailed as a major literary event by the Russian émigré press. It is a semi-autobiographical «Entwicklungsroman» and is set to the backdrop of the Russian Revolution. Gasdanow fought under the White banner against the Red Army and after their defeat, found his way via Turkey and Bulgaria to Paris, where he gained employment as a factory worker, taxi driver and hauler.This nostalgic novel opens in Paris as Kolja visits the capricious Claire whom he has not seen for 10 years. After being invited into her apartment, Claire falls asleep with Kolja beside her. He dozes and his half sleep lulls him into the land of his memories. Through a steady stream of associations, Kolja glides from one memory and story to another. He seems to have spent his youth in a kind of sleep walking state until the moment, when he meets the 18-year old Claire for the first time and falls under her spell. However, she marries another, and Kolja is left behind with a heavy sense of loss which does not diminish as the years pass. His decision to become a soldier is his way of trying to alleviate himself of this pain, which nevertheless never subsides. The battles which rage around him and the images of death are portrayed with horrendous banality.
