A bio-comic, based on the story of Sofia Taikon, a Romani woman who narrowly escaped dying in the Nazi concentrations camps as a young girl, was rescued to Sweden via the famous White Busses and lived her life here, sadly dying just before this book was published in 2005.This is an important graphic novel, retelling the incredible life of a courageous and, although living through hell, constantly positive and generous person. A story that as many as possible should read. Important is not always the same as good, though. Maus by Art Spiegelman, one of the Worlds most lauded graphic novels and also an bio-comic about the Holocaust, is sometimes accused of being famous not for being one of the best graphic novels, but for dealing with an important subject matter. Well, Maus is BOTH a great graphic novel AND deals with an important subject. Sofia Z-4515 deals with an important subject, but is sadly not a great graphic novel.The material is all there. Sofia was stil alive when the book was produced, so its based on her own stories. And it was converted into a comic by a seasoned writer and an accomplished illustrator. Neither had made any comics as far as I can tell, though, and this shined through.The art is too simple/cute and the story is too straight forward, retelling Sofias story without any real narrative verve. Dont get me wrong, the story is moving, but more despite of the comics treatment than because of it. The publisher is also very obviously not used to comics, and does a bad job at presenting the art, using far too little margins, making every page feel crammed into the book. Had this been given to an accomplished comics artist and a professional comics publisher, this could have been a masterpiece. As it now stands, its an OK comic for younger readers. The importance of the story gives it one more star in my rating than it would otherwise have been given. The book has a flip-cover, with a Swedish version and a Romani version to be read from each end.
