Warning: This is going to be a rant. I always feel a little guilty reviewing books I didnt manage to finish, so I tried, oh how I tried, to continue with the book even after it engaged my gag reflex, but theres only so much masochism a person can subject themselves to in a day. I was looking for something light and fun to read, and someone on some forum recommended Robin Kaye as a good alternative to Kristan Higgins. They lied. Within the first two pages, I knew I was going to hate this book, and things only went further downhill from there! This book should stand on a street corner with a begging bowl asking passing editors for some charity. The writing was awkward and forced and had a serious case of trying too hard to be funny. Both protagonists were seriously unlikeable and needed some one-on-one lessons on relationships. Ive hated a lot of characters over the years, sometimes because they were TSTL, sometimes because they didnt do what I personally wanted them to do, sometimes simply because the writing was bad. But rarely have I developed full-blown, outright disgust for a couple of fictional people within five minutes of being introduced to them. Let me show you why:This is how Rosalie, our lovely heroine, thinks of her boyfriend, for example:She was in a relationship вЂ” one of convenience, but still, it was enough. Joey seemed content to let things go on the way they were. She fed him several times a week; they had occasional, albeit boring, missionary-position sex; and they both had a significant other to take to family functions. It also helped that his mother no longer questioned his sexuality. For a while there, hed said, Mrs. Manetti would ask if hed like to bring a boyfriend or girlfriend to dinner. Shed said that a boyfriend wouldnt upset her, although shed looked relieved the first time Rosalie joined them for a meal.Rosalie, I hate to break it to you, but youre a douchebag.Her significant other is not much better. (Which, I suppose, is a good sign that this romance is going to work...)After getting a good look at her, Nick decided sanity was way overrated. Miss Loco was every guys wet dream. Nick liked his women curvy and built. None of those bony women who looked more like a boy than a girl for him. Tonya was always trying to lose weight, and it drove him nuts. Her ass was so small, there was almost nothing to hold. Psycho had an ass like you read about. Damn, he should ask her out for her ass alone. And she was beautiful, even without makeup. Hed never seen Tonya without makeup, not even after sweaty sex, but hed bet she wouldnt look so good. La Donna Pazza wasnt drop-dead gorgeous like Tonya, but hed lay odds she didnt get Botox injections and collagen implantsвЂ”and didnt have breasts you were afraid to squeeze for fear theyd pop. Hers looked like one hundred percent natural 36Ds.As if that wasnt appealing enough, the guy goes on to prove that hes a veritable prince in the relationship stakes.Nick had forgotten the thrill of the chase. For the last several years, he hadnt had to dog women. He had to beat them off with a stick, and hed taken full advantage of the veritable sexual smorgasbord. Nick couldnt remember when hed lost the taste for it, but for the last year or so, hed had a hard time telling the difference between girlfriends.This book is sexist. It is insulting to men and women and just people everywhere. Its books like this that make people look down their noses at romance novels and talk about how theyre tripe. It tries too hard to be funny (but fails) to be contemporary (but fails) and to be entertaining (FAIL!). Stick a fork in me, Im done.
