I feel like I just watched the middle third of a B-rated sci-fi movie commercial. This is the first of Gaiman’s short stories that I’ve read, and I wonder if they’re all disjointed slice-of-life clips. The jerky non-linear style makes it more believable and relatable… but it’s kind of weird. Weird like the way a slug feels when it slurps across your hand; you’re not so horrified that you fling it off, but your face falls and you die a little bit on the inside.So, the point-of-view character is kind of brain damaged, that’s all right, so am I before I have coffee in the morning. You’d think he’d notice when the girls are all… you know… talking about being aliens and living in the sun, and stuff. Like when he’s trying to get snugly with one of them, and she busts out with “Parent-teacher engulfed me, and I was here, embodied in a decaying lump of meat hanging on a frame of calcium.” Excuse me? Hey, boy-thing, I know you’re fifteen and testosterone makes you deaf and blind, but that ain’t exactly what most folks would call normal… As in, is this girl a homicidal maniac and you’re going to wake up in a tub of ice water, with mysterious stitches just below your ribs? The appropriate response is definitely not “…she seemed nice enough, and she was a girl anyway…” Even at the end he doesn’t seem to really get it. The metaphor is there; “You wouldn’t want to make a universe angry. I bet an angry universe would look at you with eyes like that,” but it still doesn’t register as reality. This is very Kafka’s cockroach. It’s placed in real life, but it’s an allegory. How much do we see every day that doesn’t actually register because we’re not taking the time to really listen and comprehend what’s going on in people’s lives? Like that girl at the party who had the most fun and talked to all the guys, but seemed sad when she thought no one was looking? Or the little boy grocery shopping with his parents who flinched when they turned too quickly? Is Gaiman pointing out that we need to stop and smell the roses (or, rather, not stop to smell the crazy-alien-girl-who-used-to-be-a-flower’s hair)? Or is it just a kind of weird, sort of nonsensical science fiction short story? Based on Gaiman’s penchant for exploring some of the darker sides of humanity in fairy-tales and science fiction (Stardust, recent Dr. Who episodes), I’d say that it was the former. It’s very subtle, though. That, and the fact that the story takes up a quarter of the “book,” and the rest is an extended advertisement for his new book (Ocean at the End of the Lane), makes me lean towards the latter.
