I grew up in New York City and still bask in the memories of my life there. And ever since my preteen years, I’ve been very interested in the decade known as The Roaring Twenties. What could be better, I thought, than a book about my beloved New York in my beloved 1920s?Well, as it turns out, just about any piece of writing could surpass Capital of the World: A Portrait of New York City in the Roaring Twenties, which essentially is a series of term papers gone bad. While much of its content is interesting, its execution is appallingly sloppy. Granted, as a self-employed writer, editor, and proofreader, I tend to note the occasional flaw--but this book is a virtual avalanche of errors. Seldom have I encountered a purported social history with more factual inconsistencies and botched terminology. For example, in the chapter on F. Scott Fitzgerald, Wallace writes on page 145:“The Murphys’ social circle couldn’t help but be an attraction to the Fitzgeralds. Many of them, even if they were ex-patriots, identified with the New York lifestyle of the Twenties….” [Italics mine.] Gosh, I had no idea Scott and Zelda ceased being “patriots” once they were ensconced in France. Mercifully, the term expatriates appears correctly within a similar context in a later chapter.Another jaw-dropper occurs on page 202, under a photo of interior designer Elsie de Wolfe. The caption reads, in part: “Historian Henry James hailed her success and that of her lesbian lover, the pioneering Broadway agent Elizabeth Marbury, as paving the way for women to defy society’s traditional rules….” Yet on page 206, we learn that “Marbury’s friend, the historian (and descendant of two American presidents) Henry Adams, went so far as to assert that the pair personified the American tradition of self-reinvention by defying society’s rules for women.” [Italics again mine.]It’s been quite a while since I worked in publishing, so I have to wonder: Does anyone copy-edit or proofread books these days before they see the light of print? Frankly, I wasn’t looking for a scholarly history of New York during that era. At the very least, though, I had hoped to read an engagingly well-written and well-edited account that didn’t make me want to mark corrections in red on just about every page--which I couldn’t do anyway because I was reading a library copy.
