46. A CLASSICAL PRIMER: Ancient Knowledge and Modern Minds. (2012). Dan Crompton. **.There’s not much information about the author of this wannabee book given by the publisher other than “[he] studied Classics and Linguistics at Cambridge University and lives in London.” In just a scant 182 pages, he attempts to provide the grammar basics for both the Latin and Greek languages, including the alphabets, the scripts and the pronunciation, then goes on to provide the declensions for the Latin nouns. No use is made of this information any further in the book. Even this became tainted for me because he listed the various cases for Latin nouns in an order different than those I was taught in high school. So as I was reading out the various endings, I was out of step with his listings. After this brief survey into grammar, he then launches into a survey of Greek and Roman histories, and puts as much into 26 pages as he can and then moves on. He then essays to cover Greek and Roman literature, only taking up 37 pages to do so. He’s not done, though, because there is still ancient architecture, philosophy, and science to do. You can imagine how well those topics are covered. The whole book reminded me of the old comedian, Father Guido Sarducci of Saturday Night Live fame. My favorite skit of his was when he presented his concept of the 15-minute university . His premise was that the average student only remembered 15% of what they were taught in school after a few years after graduation. His solution, then, was to teach only the 15% that was remembered and forget the rest. If you wanted a graduate degree, Sarducci would make the comment: “Got a minute?” I recommend that you take a pass on this book.
